Golf tips and free bets: Three picks for the Palmetto Championship including 40/1 local ace

THE Palmetto Championship is the focus this week ahead of the US Open on the horizon.

And it’s a mixed field this week with Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka both playing, but Tyrrell Hatton, 11th in the world, is the third favourite for the week.

There is though quite a strong English feel with Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood and Ian Poulter all involved.

Tips for Palmetto Championship

Hot shot: Harris English, 30-1

Encouraging signs at the Byron Nelson and the USPGA that he’s starting to recapture the sensational form he showed at the end of last year, when he climbed to a career high 16th in the world rankings.

The American also started 2021 with a victory in Hawaii, and at his best he can win in any company.

There have to be suspicions that the men at the top of the betting – Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka etc – will be thinking more about next week’s US Open than winning here.

English could do with a confidence boost ahead of Torrey Pines, and he’ll still be giving everything when one or two others have taken their foot off the pedal.

Mid price: Lucas Glover, 40-1

The 2009 US Open champion has been catching the eye with some consistent form recently, including a fourth at the Texas Open and eight in the Charles Schwab Challenge.

He looked to be on course for another top ten after three solid rounds at the Memorial last week, before a closing 76 sent him spiralling down to a tie for 37th.

But I’m willing to overlook that, as Muirfield Village can really punish anyone who is even slightly off their game.

The Palmetto is a new tournament at a new venue, in South Carolina – which just happens to be Glover’s home state, and he will know a lot more about the course than most of his rivals.

Long shot: Doc Redman 66-1

Not the first time Redman’s name has appeared as a lively outsider, but I still think the 23 year old American has plenty of improvement to come.

His share of ninth at the Byron Nelson was followed by solid if not spectacular efforts at the Charles Schwab and Memorial tournaments.

And his lack of experience will not count as heavily against him at this new unfamiliar venue, which is likely to reward an aggressive approach.

Doc looked certain to enjoy the tonic of a win this year after stringing together three top four finishes in quick succession in the second half of 2020, and I’m not giving up on him yet.
