One such option they could bring in alongside the Dane is Ivan Toney, whose ban will expire on January 16.

And a more budget option could be Porto's 31-year-old Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi – with his contract expiring this summer.

United line up three-man striker shortlist

Man United have drawn up a three-man striker shortlist to compete with Rasmus Hojlund up front, reports suggest.

The Red Devils have struggled for goals this season with Marcus Rashford the only recognised forward in the squad with a Premier League goal to his name.

Hojlund has scored three goals in Europe since his blockbuster summer arrival but it is understood the club are keen to sign a striker to support the young Dane.

It is felt there is too much of a burden on Hojlund's young shoulders to score goals, and United feel he could learn from playing alongside an experienced frontman.

According to the Daily Mail, United already have several targets in mind who they could try to sign when the transfer window re-opens.

One is long-term target – Napoli striker Victor Osimhen who finished as Serie A's top goalscorer last season.

  • COMMENT: Ten Hag set to be spat out by pathetic, fractured monster only Fergie could tame

After the final whistle Erik ten Hag’s assistant Steve McClaren resembled a schoolteacher trying to keep the class together.

Stood in the middle of the pitch with his arms outstretched, he was trying to get the players to stay as one and acknowledge the, by now, half-full stadium.

    Nobody was taking any notice.

A few gave some meek applause, Mason Mount bravely walked around the pitch on his own to show his appreciation.

It was a sad, almost pathetic, microcosm of a fractured, failing club.

Manchester United had just been stuffed 3-0 by the weakest Newcastle team Eddie Howe had fielded.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Ten Hag hauls in flops for one-on-one chats

Erik ten Hag has ordered his players to have one-to-one sessions with him to mend Manchester United’s broken dressing room.

The under-pressure boss is desperate to save his own job by leading the club out of their latest crisis.

Ten Hag wants to know from each player what issues they have with him, his staff, team-mates and training in a series of clear-the-air meetings today and tomorrow.

Midfielder Scott McTominay has backed the Dutchman to fix the mess, insisting the players will “fight like dogs” to save their season.

Wednesday’s shocking 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat at home to Newcastle — an eighth loss in 15 games — condemned the Red Devils to their worst start in 61 years.

Sheikh Jassim lining up bid on Premier League rivals

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani’s failed bid for Man United could see him invest in Premier League rival West Ham, reports suggest.

The report adds that should the right offer come in, she may even be willing to sell the entire 25 per cent stake owned by the Gold family.

    History being made vs Fulham

Rebecca Welch is set to make history when Fulham vs Man United kicks off by becoming the first woman to be involved as a referee in a Premier League game.

Welch will act as the fourth official for the match with referee John Brooks.

She will become the fourth woman to be part of the team of officials for a Premier League match, following on from assistant referees Wendy Toms, Sian Massey-Ellis and Natalie Aspinall.

But Welch will not be the first woman to act as fourth official for a Prem game – Massey-Ellis holds that honour after taking on the responsibility for the second half of West Ham United v Everton in 2017.

Massey-Ellis was lineswoman but picked up an injury so took on fourth official duty for the Prem clash.

Massey-Ellis will act as assistant VAR for United's trip to Fulham.

'Players can do more' says Rooney

Wayne Rooney was sympathetic towards Ten Hag in his press conference at Birmingham.

Rooney has been in charge of the club since October 11 but has not won any of his three games in charge.

Speaking ahead of his next game against Ipswich Town – coached by former United assistant Kieran McKenna – Rooney said on Ten Hag: "That's part of the job (the pressure) and I'm sure Ten Hag knows that.

"It's not going as well as they would like but i think the players need to take responsibility as well.

"I know some of the players in there and they're not performing to the levels I know they can.

"But ultimately it starts and ends with the manager.

"He will get the critics, but I think the players can do a lot more for him."

Fulham game crucial for United, says Savage

Robbie Savage has proclaimed the next few games are huge for Man United's season.

Speaking to Planet Sport Bet, he said: “The next few games are massive for them. Fulham away in the Premier League, then I’m going out to Copenhagen to watch them in the Champions League.

"If they lose against Fulham on Saturday, then for me, the midweek match next week against Copenhagen becomes a must-win game.

“I’m sure Erik ten Hag doesn’t think everything is fine – he’s got to solve problems and work things out, maybe change his style of football, but whatever he’s doing now is not working.

"If Manchester United lose both of their upcoming games, I think there’s some serious questions to be asked about whether Ten Hag can continue in his role at the club.

“I’ve always said to give Erik ten Hag time and give him until Christmas, but inevitably, all managers and coaches are judged on results.

"If they get beaten by Fulham, you can’t have played 11 and lost six league games in a season and think it’s all fine.

"If they then lose against Copenhagen, that makes their position in the Champions League very vulnerable, considering they still need to go to Galatasaray.”

'Naglesmann would be a great choice for Man Utd but he wouldn't want job' says Didi Hamann.

Former Liverpool, Man City and Newcastle star Didi Hamann has suggested Man United could go for former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann as their next coach.

However, he admitted Nagelsmann may not fancy the job due to the chaotic nature of it.

Speaking to BoyleSports who offer the latest Premier League odds, Hamann said: "I think the problem Man United might face is their team.

"If it were up to me, I wouldn't know where to start! They need players in every area on the pitch.

"A few years ago, Ralf Ragnick said the same thing. It depends on who they get. I'm not sure if the top-class managers go to Manchester United because they know that it's a three or five-year job.

"I think it's impossible to win the league within three years, but those expectations will always be there if a new manager comes in and spends a few quid.

"The other question revolves around how much money the new manager gets.

"Nagelsmaan has done well and he did good things at Bayern. He's an up-and-coming manager who has shown he can win titles, even if was unfortunate in the Champions League.

"He'd certainly be somebody you'd have a good feeling about. He knows how to play football, but it depends if he was backed.

"You need to back your manager for two or three seasons, and I don't know if that's the case at Man United.

"There's a lot of chaos at Old Trafford. However, I don't think Julian would be a bad choice.

"You don't want to keep managers for the sake of it, but you need to at least give them a chance."
