Prem icon says Maguire is 'too nervous' to play at West Ham

Premier League icon Glen Johnson reckons Harry Maguire didn't complete his £30million move to West Ham over nerves.

Asked whether Maguire should have forced a transfer to the Hammers through, Johnson told Betfred: "Yes, I think he needs to play football and show everybody that he’s still good enough to play for England.

"If he was confident enough that he would be a success at West Ham, then I believe they would have got the deal done.

"I think he’s worried that he could still play rubbish at West Ham and then the whole situation is even more embarrassing.

"I think he must be nervous about the move because let’s face it, if your current team doesn't want you and another Premier League team wants you, then the deal should be relatively easy to do.

"I just believe he isn’t as confident enough as he should be taking that move.”

Liverpool tipped to beat Red Devils to Gravenberch

Manchester United and Liverpool have both made contract offers to Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

That’s the claim this afternoon as both Prem giants look for more creative options.

So far Bayern have suggested they are happy to keep the 11-cap Dutchman.

That’s because they still have faith in the 21-year-old despite his limited game-time since arriving from Ajax in June 2022.

But United and Liverpool regard the 6ft 3ins star as the type of prospect who could develop into an ideal Prem player.

And they’ve reportedly upped the pressure on Bayern by making approaches to Gravenberch.

Fred celebrates… before dazzling debut goal ruled out

Former Manchester United man Fred thought he had scored a stunning goal on his Fenerbahce debut… only for it to be ruled out for offside.

The Brazilian, 30, joined the Turkish giants earlier this month in a £13million deal.

And he began life with a 2-0 win away at Samsunspor as last year's Turkish Super Lig runners-up look to close the gap to Galatasaray in the 2022/23 campaign.

But Fred, who impressed before being taken off in the 85th minute, was denied a goal to go with his debut win after his strike was ruled out for offside.

A clipped ball over the top deflected off a defender and looped into the path of the midfielder. He watched it drop from the sky and volleyed it superbly into roof of the net.

Fred then took off as he sprinted to the corner where Fenerbahce's substitutes celebrated with him.

But moments later those scenes would be cut short as the goal was disallowed.

And the suggestion is he will move – IF United offer £25.6million.

    Nev blasts Arsenal's keeper policy

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has slammed Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta's decision to have two goalkeepers competing for a starting spot.

Arteta added David Raya to his squad earlier this month to provide direct competition for Aaron Ramsdale.

Raya has signed on an initial £3million loan from Brentford, with an option to make the deal permanent. However, Neville is not convinced and criticised the decision before the Gunners' trip to Crystal Palace on Monday night.

"I’ve said this before, I’m not a fan of competition for goalkeepers," he said on Sky Sports. "I think you need a clear number one and then a clear number two. That’s my view.

"Obviously, I’ve experienced it at United, where we had clear number ones and number twos and we’ve had in some situations two, sort of, equal keepers."

The former England defender went on to add: "The problem is, you end up with a situation every time a goalkeeper makes a mistake, which they inevitably do, where you say ‘will they play the other guy the next week?’

"Once you do that once, you’ve undermined the situation and you’ve created what I think sometimes is a very difficult situation for everybody in the team.

"You haven’t got stability with your back four, both goalkeepers feel a little bit unnerved, a little but anxious that if they make a mistake they’re out.

"So I’m interested to see what Mikel Arteta does with it and how he manages it, because I’ve never seen it work before, really well."

    Utd want 'Gravenberch AND Sofyan'

Manchester United hope to sign Ryan Gravenberch AND Sofyan Amrabat this summer.

That's the claim from 90min tonight – despite Liverpool also being linked to both midfielders.

But Fiorentina have said they are willing to help anchorman Sofyan Amrabat achieve his dream of joining a big club.

Lineker backs Mason exit as situation 'untenable'

Gary Lineker has broken his silence on Manchester United's Mason Greenwood decision, welcoming the end to an "untenable" situation.

The Match Of The Day presenter and ex-Three Lions captain spoke out, as it emerged United face losing millions letting Greenwood go.

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona star Lineker took to X, formerly called Twitter, to offer his thoughts on the Premier League club's announcement Greenwood would be leaving.

The BBC host shared the club's statement and added: "Inevitable and right decision on an untenable situation."

United today announced they had come to a "collaborative decision" with the 21-year-old forward that he would be moving on. But the club did not say whether his £75,000-a-week contract would be terminated or whether he would be put on loan or sold.

The Red Devils now face a scramble to get rid of Greenwood in just ten days or face losing millions.

If United haven't sold or loaned him out by September 1 when football's summer transfer window closes, they could have to pay him millions to cancel his contract which is due to expire in 2025.

They could only go beyond the deadline if Greenwood is picked up by a club in Saudi Arabia because their window closes on September 20.

Recent expensive new recruits to the Saudi league include former United colleague Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as France's Karim Benzema after leaving Real Madrid and PSG's Brazilian forward Neymar.

Rachel Riley breaks silence on Mason situation

Rachel Riley has broken her silence after threatening to pull her support for Manchester United if Mason Greenwood returned to the club.

The Prem giants today announced their striker, 21, would not be returning to Old Trafford following his suspension.

Posting on social media the maths whizz praised a Women's Aid tweet as a "great statement" after the latest Greenwood news broke this afternoon.

The national charity's Twitter account had posted: "We know that the news from @ManUtd this afternoon, that Mason Greenwood will be moving on from the club, will be a relief to many survivors of abuse.

"This case has brought back painful memories for many people."

Rachel, 37, previously said that if striker Greenwood is allowed to return, she would not be able to continue supporting the club.

Greenwood was arrested and charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour back in January 2022. He recently had all charges dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in February this year.

In a statement released this afternoon, Manchester United confirmed they had finished the probe into Greenwood. But they did not reveal what his future holds – including whether his £75,000-a-week contract will be terminated or if he will be put on loan or sold.

Greenwood's future has not been revealed but Utd have ten days to sell him or get him out on loan before the transfer window closes.

If they don't make the 11pm cut-off on September 1, Utd face paying the England star millions to cut his contract.

    Gunners 'eye Utd target Ferguson'

Arsenal want to moved for Brighton striker Evan Ferguson before Manchester United, it's claimed tonight.

Football Transfers claim the Gunners are the "most likely" bidders for the six-cap Republic of Ireland star, 18.

It's understood Arsenal believe the 6ft 2ins hot prospect would be ideal back-up while Gabriel Jesus battles back to fitness.

But it's suggested the Gunners might have to wait until next year to stand a serious chance of landing Ferguson.

Arsenal have already pinched Benjamin White and Leandro Trossard from the Seagulls.

Liverpool 'ahead of Utd in Ryan race'

Manchester United and Liverpool have both made contract offers to Ryan Gravenberch to help force through the Dutchman's exit from Bayern Munich, according to reports.

The offers have been made ahead of the £21million-rated midfielder holding showdown talks with his club, report The Mirror.

It's claimed that Liverpool lead the race – as United need to sell before they can bring anyone else in.

The 21-year-old joined the Bundesliga side from Ajax back in 2022 prior to Erik ten Hag joining Old Trafford.

Had Gravenberch not moved to the Allianz, Ten Hag would likely have tried to sign the youngster during the start of his career at Man Utd.

The Dutchman's move to Germany has not gone to plan as he only made six appearances in his debut season. That's reportedly forced the Netherlands international to consider a move elsewhere – and will be discussed at the upcoming talks.

Part of his desire to leave Bayern Munich is so that he can secure first team football and put himself in the frame for international selection ahead of Euro 2024.

Manchester United boss Ten Hag is desperate to bolster his midfield and is said to be keen to reunite with Gravenberch.

Utd & Arsenal in top 10 spenders… but guess who is fifth?!

Chelsea have spent considerably more than any other club in the world in the last calendar year.

The Blues come out on top of the list of the top spenders having a net spend of £451million – however there are six other Premier League clubs in the top ten.

Chelsea have spent close to £1bn in the last year since Todd Boehly's arrival with players such as Moises Caiedo and Enzo Fernandez arriving for over £100m each. The West London club have managed to earn some money back through player sales with Kai Havertz, Mason Mount and Mateo Kovacic being sold for a combined fee of £142.85m.

Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Hilal is the next biggest spender with a net spend of £282m with the club completing high-profile deals to sign Neymar, Ruben Neves, Kalidou Koulibaly, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Malcom and Bono.

Arsenal are third on the list with the club adding £105m midfielder Declan Rice, Havertz, and Jurrien Timber to the team this summer amid a net spend of £228m.

Real Madrid take the fourth spot having spent big on Jude Bellingham, Arda Guler, and Fran Garcia.

The next club comes as a shock on the list as Premier League strugglers Bournemouth, who were taken over by American businessman Bill Foley in 2022.

He has since bankrolled new manager Andoni Iraola to a £100m tspend this summer – adding Leeds star Tyler Adams, Sassuolo winger Hamed Junior Traore and Bristol City's Alex Scott all for £20m-plus.

Utd face 10-day rush to offload Greenwood

Manchester United are facing a mad scramble to get rid of Mason Greenwood in just ten days or face losing millions.

The club today announced their striker, 21, would not be returning to Old Trafford following his suspension.

Greenwood's future has not been revealed but Utd have ten days to sell him or get him out on loan before the transfer window closes.

If they don't make the 11pm cut-off on September 1, Utd face paying the England star millions to cut his contract.

They could only go beyond the deadline if Greenwood is picked up by a Saudi club as their window closes on September 20.

The striker could also follow his ex-teammate Fred to Turkey to make it in time for their September 15 cut-off point.

If Utd do loan him out, there would have to be an agreement between both clubs over who pays what percentage of his salary.

It is understood final details are still being hashed out behind closed doors but the club could potentially lose his value as a player if they cannot loan or sell him.

Greenwood's £75,000-a-week contract doesn't expire until 2025 after he signed a four-and-a-half-year deal by the club in 2021.

    What next for Mason?

Mason Greenwood has "mutually agreed" to leave Manchester United – opening the possibility of a move to a number of clubs.

The England striker, 21, had been suspended since January last year after his arrest for rape and sexual assault.

Greenwood had been reluctant to move abroad because he did not want to leave his family.

However, if he does become open to an overseas move, a number of potential options lie ahead for him – including a number of Italian giants reportedly showing interest.

It was claimed n June that AC Milan had been making inquiries about him.

Juventus are also said to have sounded out Greenwood’s camp back in May.

And The Sun revealed last month Roma had made approaches for Greenwood.

Jose Mourinho had telephoned Greenwood to sound him out about a loan move to his Italian Serie A side.

Turkish clubs have previously shown interest – and big-spending Saudi teams are tipped to be keen.
