Michael van Gerwen is the man bookmakers think most likely to dislodge Gerwyn Price as world champion ahead of the 2022 PDC World Darts Championship at the Alexandra Palace.

MVG is 4/1 second-favourite with Grosvenor Sport to land a fourth world title and end a drought in majors that stretches back to the 2020 UK Open.

The Green Machine remains one of the highest-performers in the sport on averages and he's shown glimmers of his old spark on several occasions on the last 12 months but he’s fallen short at key moments and has only managed to reach one major final at the European Championship, where he lost to Rob Cross.

MVG goes heads to the Ally Pally ranked third behind Gerwyn Price and Peter Wright in the PDC rankings but is pushing for tournament favouritism having landed on what looks a favourable quarter which will probably end up with a meeting with either Gary Anderson or Rob Cross.

Reigning world champion and world number one Gerwyn Price heads the betting with Grosvenor Sport at 7/2 and the Welshman will become just the fourth player to retain the PDC world title behind Phil Taylor, Gary Anderson and Adrian Lewis if he is go all the way once again.

Price hasn't been the irresistible force that many expected him to become on the back of last year's Ally Pally success, adding just a win in the Grand Slam of Darts to his major wins since.

However, the Welshman has developed a trademark ability to peak at the business end of a tournament so as long as he avoids any early scares against the likes of Kim Huybrechts, Stephen Bunting or Dirk van Duijvenbode then it looks highly likely that he'll be bang there come the semi-final stage.

One player who looks set to give the big two in the betting a run for their money is Jonny Clayton who has had a year to remember.

The Ferret has won six tournaments in 2021 including the Premier League, World Grand Prix, Masters and World Series, while his seasonal average of 98.49 is third best on tour behind MVG (99.34) and Price (99.23).

Clayton was dumped out of the 2021 World Championships by Joe Cullen at the third-round stage but he's a completely different proposition now and the 7/1 about him round off an incredible year with the biggest prize of all will appeal to many.
