On what will be remembered as one of the best days of his life, Celso Rafael Ayala asked his River Plate side to hold up letters reading ‘Lili, marry me’ and proposed.

He was also accompanied by his daughters, and those present struggled to contain their emotions when ‘Chito’ and his partner celebrated their engagement.

Celso Rafael Ayala’s River Plate side held up letters spelling out ‘Lili, marry me’ before a match

For the special moment, Lili Benitez was led out on to the pitch and quickly welled up, having spotted the line of players holding up their letters.

After walking towards Chito and sharing a quick kiss, her husband-to-be then got down on one knee and presented her with the ring.

Putting down their signs, his team then clapped and congratulated their coach, all while the tears kept flowing in emotional scenes.

‘Chito’ was also joined by his daughters and tears flowed as his partner walked towards them

Lili Benitez said yes to the proposal, and Chito then bent down to place the ring on her finger

The whole proposal was captured by the cameras of Tigo Sports at the River Plate Stadium, just minutes before the home side’s fixture against Guarani.

It was then business as usual as Chito’s focus turned to the game at hand, but he was made to suffer mixed feelings after watching his team concede five in a rout.

River Plate even found themselves three goals down at half-time, making for what would have been a sobering and red-faced pep talk from Chito.

But the good pre-match feeling for River Plate didn’t last after they lost 5-1 against Guarani

Fernando Fernandez notched his brace for Guarani on 58 minutes for their fourth goal, but the home team hauled one back through Rodrigo Francisco Vera Encina.

Then, with just over a quarter of an hour until time, the visitors netted a fifth, rounding off the setback for Chito less than two hours on from his engagement.

However, his residing memory will undoubtedly be the proposal, when football, at least for the time being, took a back seat.
