WATFORD are trying to beat Hull to the signature of young Swedish prospect Kevin Harletun.
The Hornets have been alerted to the availability of the 19-year-old striker who is about to come to the end of his contract with Malmo.
The Sweden Under-19 international has decided against committing himself to a new deal with Malmo in favour of trying his luck abroad.
That means he will be available essentially on a free transfer from November – with a compensation fee of around £140,000 all he would cost.
Now Watford have become aware of the potential to bring in a player at Vicarage Road who has been a prolific scorer through the academy levels.
Until now, Championship club Hull had seemed the most likely destination for Harletun.
He was given permission to spend three weeks training with the Tigers where he impressed manager Grant McCann.

Harletun effectively becomes a free agent when the Swedish league season finishes in a couple of months, although Malmo would retain his registration.
They would then demand a compensation payment when the transfer window opens for the years spent developing him in their system.
At that price he is not seen as a gamble by Watford, though Hull are likely to be able to offer him a quicker route to first team football.
