Ben Elton kicks off Friday Night Live with a savage dig at Liz Truss

Ben Elton kicked off his Friday Night Live Channel 4 special with a savage dig at Liz Truss, after she announced her resignation as Prime Minister yesterday.

Ms Truss announced she was stepping down as Prime Minister, after holding the role for only 44 days, during which the economy crashed and both her Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary departed.

She was outlived by a lettuce, which broke the headlines, while her stint also managed to be shorter than a singular series of Love Island, shorter than Kim Kardashian’s notoriously short-lived marriage to Kris Humphries, and even – would you believe it – shorter than Jedward lasted in the live shows of The X Factor.

And of course, Elton couldn’t help but kick off his show with a jibe at all the chaos we’ve had with Prime Ministers over recent times.

The comedian, 63, brought back the beloved stand-up and entertainment show as part of celebrations for Channel 4’s 40th anniversary.

Kicking off his show, he began: ‘In these grim and difficult days there couldn’t be a better time to spread love and laughter,’ adding: ‘But while we’re doing that please spare a thought for poor Liz Truss, who resigned yesterday, thus putting a merciful end to the most pointlessly destructive, eye-wateringly expensive, ego-driven carcrash of a delusional vanity project since Simon Cowell had his face lift project!’

Elton continued: ‘How did this great nation end up in such a monumental catastrophe?’ before answering: ‘Well we know how… it was the Conservative party!’

Elton then of course turned to Boris Johnson for a few cheeky digs, joking that he couldn’t ‘get Brexit done’ in the same way that divorces aren’t simple.

‘Blimey, he’s dumped enough Baby Mamas in his time that you’d think he would have worked that out, wouldn’t you?!’ he said, leaving viewers in hysterics.

‘Liz Truss has been a triumph as Ben Elton’s warm up act,’ one person wrote.

Another penned: ‘Great to hear some truth spoken on the TV for once. Bang on Ben Elton.’

Meanwhile, someone else wrote: ‘Great opening from Ben Elton on #FridayNightLive – welcome back,’ while several others echoed how much they’d missed Elton on their screens.

Friday Night Live is available to watch on All4.
