'Broken' Dean Gaffney shares emotional tribute after devastating family loss

EastEnders star Dean Gaffney has revealed that his mum, Marian, has died.

The actor, best known for his role as Robbie Jackson, confirmed the devastating news in an update on his Instagram.

Dean wrote alongside some pictures of himself and his mum: ‘I am simply broken to share that my beautiful selfless mother Marian has sadly passed away. I was, am and always will be a mummy’s boy so this news has completely floored me.

‘I spoke to her every day and in some ways I’m glad I’m the one that found her asleep.

‘I will retain all the amazing memories that we shared and whilst I understand the circle of life means everyone will feel this pain at some point in their lives, life can be very cruel at times, 69 is no age.’

He added: ‘To know I will never be able to physically see or speak to her ever again is beyond any pain I’ve ever experienced in my life.

‘We all tell our parents and loved ones we love them flippantly at the end of a phone call but please tell them you actually really love them… put down that phone when you’re with them, as my mums only criticism of me was that I would be on my phone when in her company.

‘Life really does change from one minute to the next.

‘I truly love you Mum, you don’t only hold a special place in my heart, you are my heart.

‘For anyone that knew her, I don’t need to remind you of who my mum was as a person for others that don’t, she was the most amazing selfless, caring, generous soul to ever walk the earth.

‘Mum, I truly love you.’

Dean received many kind and thoughtful comments on the post, with the likes of Myleene Klass and Jake Wood among the famous faces sending their love for Dean and his family.

The actor was recently part of the all-stars series of I’m A Celebrity, which saw iconic contestants return to a camp in South Africa to see who would become the ultimate champion.

First taking part in 2006, Dean previously revealed that doctors examined him in 2020 ahead of a possible appearance on the show during Covid at Gwrych Castle in North Wales and found a number of polyps in his large intestine that needed immediate surgery.

The grandfather-of-two was one of the 12 stars on standby to take the place of any campmate that caught Covid in 2020, and he remembered being called into a medical in October after securing his place as a standby.

‘I thought nothing of it and did the routine blood tests. When it came back, it showed I was losing blood.

‘They thought it might be anaemia or an iron deficiency. I thought they were being a bit over the top,’ he confessed to The Mirror.

‘Later that day the results showed they had found polyps which were massive. One was huge. I think 20mm, which is big for a polyp.’

I’m A Celebrity… South Africa was ultimately won by Myleene Klass.
