Call The Midwife fans were delighted to spot one of their absolute favourite EastEnders legends return to the small screen.
ActorJames Alexandrou, 37, made a name for himself as Martin Fowler on EastEnders, and was a regular on the BBC soap from the 1990s until his departure in 2007. His role of Martin was later handed over to Strictly Come Dancing star James Bye.
Following his exit from the soap, James has starred in a series of plays, and most recently featured on Silent Witness in 2015.
Eight years on from what’s thought to be his last TV appearance, the 37 year old sent fans into a frenzy after appearing on Sunday night’s Call The Midwife.
“Martin Fowler in Poplar !! #CallTheMidWife!!” tweeted one excited fan, as another penned: “Hello Martin Fowler! #callthemidwife”.
"I see Martin Fowler has time travelled back to 1968 #callthemidwife," joked one viewer, while someone else said: "I'd keep an eye on Martin Fowler in that van.. he's got previous for bad driving. #callthemidwife”.
In the wake of people’s response to his Call The Midwife debut, James took to Twitter to thank fans as he explained that he wanted to do the show for his late mum.
He wrote: “Seeing some lovely messages come through about @CallTheMidwife1 with onscreen wife @LydiaLaaaaarson. Lost mum to cancer + this was a fav show of hers so was a tough gig, but one I wanted to do for her. Thanks for having me – and while we’re here – pay nurses whatever they want.”
James echoed similar sentiments earlier on in the week as he teased his show debut.
Sharing a trailer for the episode, he wrote: “Blimey guv’nor. With the incredible @LydiaLaaaaarson this one was for my mum. Thanks for having me @CallTheMidwife1 x”.
As well as voicing their excitement of seeing him on the show, many Call The Midwife viewers have gone on to applaud his performance.
Someone said: “Both your and @LydiaLaaaaarson performance in this evenings episode not to mention that of Jenny Agutter was so accurate and I say that as someone who has tragically lived this 10 years ago. Thank you for portraying the storyline in such a sensitively real manner”.
“You were amazing, well done”, added another.
While excited by James’ cameo, viewers went on to be left heartbroken as beloved character Nurse Lucille Robinson announced her departure from Poplar.
The Enoch Powell speech left her feeling homesick, sparking her decision to return to Jamaica after friend Cyril Robinson bought her a ticket.
