Coronation Street fans saw Fiz Stape (played by Jennie McAlpine) get into a police car during Friday night’s double bill and head to the station for questioning over the fire that was started in Alina Pop’s (Ruxandra Porojnicu) apartment. The mother-of-two had only just arrived back in Weatherfield after fleeing with daughter Hope Stape (Isabella Flanagan) when she got a knock on the door. But the conversation she had prior with Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) about Hope understanding the enormity of her actions got viewers worried. Will Fiz be Hope’s next target after the child blames her mother for the consequences of her actions?
Speaking to her ex-partner, Fiz said: “[It’s] good to be home.”
“You’re doing the right thing,” Tyrone replied. “I know I went along with it but the longer you were away, the more worried I got.”
“Thanks for not calling the police,” Fiz commented and the mechanic continued: “Well, I haven’t yet but I think we should consider it – we’re going to have to start facing up to things.”
“I just needed time to think,” she explained. “I needed time to process all of this and try to get her to see the enormity of what she did.”
As for whether it worked, Fiz added: “Sometimes I think that she does understand and the other times it’s like she doesn’t seem bothered.”
“She’s been in trouble before, but come on, this is a different league,” Tyrone reminded her and Fiz admitted: “I know. And I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’m scared of her sometimes Ty, I don’t know what to do.”
“She needs help,” Tyrone argued and their conversation was interrupted by a knock at the door.
Viewers took to Reddit to discuss this storyline and someone posted: “Hope is a psychopath.
“I have to agree with what Ty said. If Hope gets away with this then she will only get worse and one day she could hurt Ruby.
“I understand as a mother Fiz wants to protect her but I don’t think she is doing the right thing by running away.
“The child has broken another kids arm in a tantrum, set fire to a factory, set fire to the flat and used an accelerator (this is progressing like how murderers usually start with assault) She could potentially have caused a miscarriage.
“If Alina had died in the fire I still feel like Fiz would bury her head in the sand. She said Hope was like John and they will never understand her. What is it going to take for her to realise Hope NEEDS professional help,” the post continued.
Someone replied: “I think, unfortunately, Corrie is playing the long game with Hope.
“By having Fiz stick her head in the sand now, Hope will undoubtedly escalate and it will continue with bigger stories as she get older.
“Until she’s a late teen/early adult and then turns on Fiz herself, possibly killing her, for not getting her help sooner or whatever reason is in her head at the time.”
Another added: “I quite like the idea. Stape’s story was a slow burn too. If they continue to escalate Hope over the next 5 years, culminating in Fizz’s tragic death, it could be really good.”
One fan suggested: “The next step will be Hope killing small animals. Fiz will say she was just curious about death. I wouldn’t let her near Gemma and Chesney’s quads.
“This whole story seems to be leading to a bigger story about Hope being a psycho.”
“Hope needs help and appropriate consequences for her actions,” a comment read.
Fiz has been on the soap since 2001 and the actress hasn’t said anything recently about leaving.
Perhaps the character will be injured by Hope but not killed off?
There has been the previous suspicion that Hope will target her sister, Ruby Dobbs (Macy Alabi).
She was mentioned for the first time in many months in the spoilers for the soap and how Tyrone wanted to remove her from No. 9 because she was in danger.
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
