Corrie’s Alya stabbed as she wrestles crazed knifeman intent on killing Maria

Coronation Street's race hate and teenage grooming storyline takes a dramatic turn when a knife wielding teenager stabs Alya Nazir.

Fired up with hatred, teenager Blake has gone to an event organised to highlight the Weatherfield refugee drop-in centre that Maria Connor as a local councillor has been campaigning for.

The crazed knifeman is intent on killing her and as he rushes towards her brandishing the knife Alya spots what is happening, jumps in front of Blake and he stabs her in the stomach.

As she falls to the floor the horrified guests realise what is happening and run out into the street as Gary and Daryan battle with Blake who is still brandishing the knife.

Alya is rushed to hospital for a life saving operation.

The attack marks the climax of the recent hard-hitting storyline which has highlighted the online grooming of disenfranchised and impressionable young men showing the recruitment techniques of extremists groups.

Over the last few months viewers saw Max Turner, David Platt’s teenage son, befriended in person by older, mentor-like figures that gave him a sense of loyalty and brotherhood. He then became embroiled in the spreading of racist propaganda.

The hard-hitting storylines have caused some controversy with Corrie fans divided over their message.

Some accused the show on social media of becoming too political and ‘virtue signalling’ and calling for its writers to be sacked.

But producer Iain Macleod explained: “We are exploring a very 21st Century problem: teenagers self-radicalising through watching extreme content online.

“In the end, we wanted this to be a story about communication within families – what are the right and wrong ways to talk to younger family members who are gravitating towards extreme views?”

Fans will have to wait and find out what's next for Alya.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday on ITV at 8pm
