Danny Dyer had admitted to having doubts about leaving EastEnders, following a nine-year stint as Mick Carter.
The actor, who has won over a legion of fans for his portrayal of the popular pub landlord, revealed earlier this year that he had decided to leave the BBC One soap.
Bosses wasted little time in throwing together an explosive exit storyline, which saw Mick embark on a relationship with Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks), who has lied and manipulated her way into his heart, after destroying his marriage to soulmate Linda (Kellie Bright).
Janine, however, is set to be exposed on Christmas Day, with the truth outing in a truly unmissable episode of the serial drama – one which will ultimately feature Mick’s final scenes.
‘It’s very emotional for me,’ said actor Danny, discussing his goodbye as Mick. ‘I’m very attached to the show and it’s been a third of my career. 30 years I’ve been knocking about in this industry and nearly 10 I’ve been in this show. To make the decision I made, I didn’t make it lightly.’
Danny, 44, revealed that – even after the decision was made – he questioned if it was the right one, with his leaving party proving to be particularly difficult in this respect.
‘I was questioning if I’d made the right decision,’ he stated.
‘There was a lot of love for me in the room and there was a part of me that just wanted to duck out because it was emotional for me and I thought it would probably be easier just to leave by the back door.’
The Human Traffic actor also heaped praise on EastEnders, saying that he was in a ‘bad place’ when he first joined the show, adding that then-show boss Dominic Treadwell-Collins took a ‘risk’ on him.
‘I’m so proud of that era that we had,’ he added. ‘All good things come to an end, obviously. I really did appreciate all them years that we had and we did some really strong, beautiful work.
‘But the show has to change and it has to move on. I didn’t think I’d last nine years, no. Not in a million years, no.’
Can we have another nine please? We’ll miss you, Danny!
EastEnders airs these scenes on Christmas day at 9:25pm on BBC One.
