Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby hosted chef Phil Vickery on today’s (Thursday, March 11) This Morning on ITV to cook them lunch, but one of the presenters wasn’t too pleased with what he was served, leaving the cook in shock after he pulled a face tasting the dish. Phil wasn’t offended by Phillip’s rant about his potatoes and was glad Holly at least enjoyed her meal.
On today’s show, Phil was cooking up some new potatoes for a roast chicken traybake.
He explained how his “golden rule” with potatoes is to leave then to chill 10-15 minutes at room temperature after being chilled.
“Do you eat them cold like a salad?” asked Holly.
“Room temperature,” the chef reiterated. “You can boil them up again if you want to.
“To me that texture is perfect,” he tried to explain to the hosts, but Phillip wasn’t having it.
“It’s a funny tipping point with me,” he shared. “I adore new potatoes, I don’t like potato salad. I don’t like cold potatoes.”
“What?” gasped Holly.
“I don’t know why,” continued Phillip.
“It’s not the mayonnaise thing then? It’s the fact they are just cold?” asked the cook, worried about the success of this dish with the presenter.
“I think it’s because they are cold. I like warm potatoes. Is that wrong?” wondered Phillip.
Holly supported her friend saying: “No, you can like what you like.”
“But also Phillip is you chill potatoes, the starch certainly sets up,” said Phil, defending his room temperature potatoes against Phillip’s hate for cold potatoes.
“You might not like this then,” joked Holly.

However, the damage was already made and Phillip had to apologise for his blunder.
“I just had a taste and the reason you looked right at me as I pulled my face, and I didn’t mean to pull a face, but I didn’t know they were cold,” tried to justify himself, Phillip.
“No, no, no, they are not cold, they are room temperature,” the chef tried to point out again.
The host hit back: “It’s not that cold in here.”
“It is in the kitchen,” argued the cook, to which Phillip conceded: “Alright, the kitchen is cold, I’ll give you that.”
Holly tried to calm the waters and chimed in: “I like cold potatoes.”
Pleased that someone at least appreciated his dish, the chef thanked her before they moved on.
Earlier in the show, Phillip managed to get to the chef who jokingly walked off the stage.
