EastEnders seen its fair share of drama in 2020, but the end of one year simply brings with it the beginning of another, and make no mistake, there is plenty more drama to come.
The residents of Walford — like the rest of us — are no doubt happy to bid adieu to 2020, but 2021 won’t be plain sailing either, that’s for sure, as shocks and revelations lurk around every corner.
With Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) having has faced his demons head on in the spectacular New Year’s Eve instalment of the BBC One soap, he sets out to confront abuser Katy Lewis (Simone Lahbib) — and it’s a confrontation that will change everything.
However, the question on the entire nation’s collective lips is: is it too late for him to save his marriage? Can he and his beloved Linda (Kellie Bright) reconcile?
That remains to be seen, but the reappearance of a familiar face in Walford helps him to connect to his new truth.
Meanwhile, Ruby Allen (Louisa Lytton) doubles back on her plan for revenge, but she ultimately gets more tangled in a web of her own lies.
As she continues to feud with her former best friend Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), will she ultimately go too far and thus push Martin Fowler (James Bye) away?
One mistake too many spells the end for a beloved Walford couple — but which one? That is the question!
Speaking of love, it’s certainly in full flow in 2021 with more than one surprising romance blooming. However, given how difficult living in Walford can be for any partnership, will any pairing last the distance or is it all a matter of lust over love?
Elsewhere Lucas Johnson’s (Don Gilet) and Chelsea Fox’s (Zaraah Abrahams) reappearance in Denise’s (Diane Parish) life will take a surprising turn, while Sharon Beale Watts (Letitia Dean) starts to see the real implication of her shocking actions.
Meanwhile, Kheerat Panesar (Jaz Deol) teams up with an unexpected family.
But darkness bubbles under the surface of Albert Square once again, as killer Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith) covers up another murder.
The truth, for now, remains undiscovered, but will the solicitor get his comeuppance before he strikes again?
‘One of the big moments of last year was the death of Chantelle and everybody’s asking the question of when Gray will receive his comeuppance,’ said Executive Producer Jon Sen. ‘The soap God’s never forgive something like that and we need to see Gray pay, but I’m going to keep when that’ll happen close to my chest but it’s something we’ve talked about a lot.
‘Of course the big moment from Christmas was Sharon’s deathly scheming against Ian after she masterminded the attack with Phil that didn’t go quite to plan. Sharon isn’t about to let Ian off the hook that quickly, her poisonous plotting is just getting started and she wants to avenge Denny’s death once and for all.
‘There’s some brilliant stories coming up for Stacey and Ruby, there’s obviously much more to play with Lucas’ story as the real aftermath of his re-emergence comes to bear on Denise’ life.
‘We’ve got the ongoing story of Callum and his duplicity in having gone undercover against Phil, all the while Ben is none-the-wiser and only falling deeper in love…
‘We’ve got some really great stuff for the Panesars as we see Kheerat team up with an unlikely family on the Square. There’s also a few surprising romantic pairing’s that I’m looking forward to seeing blossom as well as love on the horizon for Isaac and Lola. We will continue to see how Billy suffers with Jay and Honey too.
‘Tiff and Keegan are still going strong, albeit penniless, and we’re looking forward to seeing what happens when they move into Number 25 with Dotty and the chaos that ensues. We’ll also be getting a closer look at some of the newer resident’s as they have stories yet to be discovered…
‘After 15 years, we’re set to say goodbye to Max Branning and it’s safe to say he’ll go out in dramatic style. We’ll also see the ongoing effect of Mick’s abuse and with Frankie intertwined with the Carter’s evermore, she struggles now that the truth is out.’
It’s going to be a year to remember by all accounts!
