EastEnders fans saw Amy Mitchell confide in Denise Fox about her battle with self-harming as the teen, played by Ellie Dadd, struggles with her mental health.
After seeing Amy turn to Denise for support, the character, played by Diane Parish, 53, is determined to be there for Amy – which saw her secure a counselling appointment for the teenager.
And as the storyline continues to see Jack, played by Scott Maslen, struggle to get his head around self-harming, fans have taken to Twitter to praise the soap for raising awareness so well on screen.
One viewer said how Denise "needs credit" for the way she has been since Amy came to her in confidence.
"More people like Denise please, patience, compassion, love and understanding, she was brilliant with Amy and deserves so much credit for that," they wrote.
Another said: "That scene between Amy and Denise was so powerful and spoke volumes. Well done EastEnders! #itsoktotalk #mentalhealth #eastenders."
One social media user added: "That Denise and Amy scene on the stairs was one of the most touching and heartbreaking scenes I've ever seen.
"It hit so close to home and I'm sure it did for many others.
"Amazing performances from Diane and Ellie."
"This is such a realistic scene of Amy being at a counselling session. A lot of schools can offer this kind of support to students who are struggling with bereavement or their mental health," a fourth shared.
Another commented: "That episode was incredible. The scene between Denise and Amy was so powerful. Diane Parish is a powerhouse."
While Denise has offered to help Amy, Jack believed that the whole thing was a waste of time.
After being disappointed in Jack's reaction, fans saw Denise speak to Amy about her own experience of going through a similarly tough time.
Denise says: "I didn’t want help. I just wanted to completely erase myself, even if it was just for a minute or, like, five seconds. I wonder if you feel a little bit like that?"
It came after Amy's mum Sam Mitchell told Jack that she'd walked in on Amy self-harming in her room.
EastEnders airs on Mondays – Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
