Viewers know Stuart Highway (played by Ricky Champ) has had a hard time accepting his breast cancer diagnosis, but with the help of EastEnders nurse Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy), he managed to bring himself back to hospital to speak to a doctor. At the end of Thursday’s episode though, he lied to his wife Rainie Highway (Tanya Franks), telling her it was Sonia who is battling the illness. If word gets out, could the miscommunication see the return of Walford favourite and Sonia’s mum Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson)?
Long-term fans of the BBC soap will remember Carol left in 2015 following a second stint on the show, after first being introduced in 1993.
In tonight’s episode, Rainie spotted Sonia and Stuart looking very close after she’d accompanied him to the hospital appointment.
She later demanded to see Stuart’s phone for proof of an affair, and while looking through his jacket she came upon the breast cancer information leaflets.
She asked: “Has Sonia… because her mum had it, didn’t she?”
She repeated: “Has she got it?”
Stuart, not wanting to worry his wife, nodded as Rainie appeared shocked.
Now that Rainie believes Sonia is ill, she might end up causing further trouble while trying to help.
Could the mention of Carol indicate she will be making a comeback to the soap?
The timing would make sense seeing as Sonia’s “dad” Terry Cant (Brian Conley) is currently scamming her for money with the help of his niece Dotty Cotton (Milly Zero).
Fans have been confused as to how Sonia wouldn’t have spoken to Carol about Terry’s suspicious return to her life after growing up without him.
He turned up in Walford months ago and claimed to be her father, but viewers now know that he and Dotty are just after Sonia’s money.
Could the big reveal finally come if Carol unexpectedly turns up on the Square and announces “Terry” isn’t who he says he is?
It’s possible Rainie might even contact Carol, believing Sonia to be too afraid to reach out to her mum.
Not wanting her to suffer and face the diagnosis alone, Rainie may think she’s doing Sonia a favour by informing Carol about the cancer.
It’s likely Stuart won’t realise what his wife has done until it’s too late, and the mistake could force him to admit the truth.
When she arrives at the home of a confused Sonia, Carol will probably be set straight about the cancer diagnosis.
But it would only be a matter of time before she finds out about Terry.
Could the conman finally be exposed to Sonia?
Viewers found out the truth about Terry back in September when he ended up being arrested.
Dotty went to pick him up, asking: “What the hell are you playing at?”
She added: “You could have jeopardised all our hard work.
“You’ve been playing the part for so long you’re actually starting to believe it.
“You are not Sonia’s dad, remember?”
She then referred to him as “Uncle Tom”.
Since then, the two often discuss their plans to scam Sonia, but it seems Terry is starting to feel guilty.
Will he end up going through with it?
And if so, how far will he get before Carol turns up and ruins the plans?
Viewers might finally get the big reveal they’ve been waiting for through the return of an EastEnders favourite.
EastEnders continues tomorrow at 8pm on BBC One.
