EastEnders legend Rita Simons is returning to the world of soap just months after reprising her role as dead character Roxy Mitchell.
The actress was controversially axed from the BBC Soap six years ago alongside co-star Samantha Womack, with Roxy and Ronnie drowning together in a swimming pool.
It sparked outrage among viewers at the time, a feeling that hasn’t particularly dissipated over the years.
Which is why there was delight all round when Roxy appeared to daughter Amy (Ellie Dadd) in a moving vision during a therapy session.
Amy had been struggling with her mental health, which had triggered bouts of self harm.
As she struggled through a family therapy session, she imagined her mum before her, with Roxy telling her that she loves her and is proud of her.
The moving scene won acclaim across the audience and, despite being only a couple of minutes long, it left an impact as Roxy gave powerful advice to her daughter, while Amy shared emotion over her mum leaving her.
It certainly gave us all an appetite to see more of Rita on our screens, so the good news is that she has joined the cast of Hollyoaks for an upcoming appearance.
Metro.co.uk understands that the role will be a fleeting cameo, but will be packed with drama despite the briefness.
A source added to The Sun: ‘Rita’s new character will certainly ruffle feathers and isset to stir the pot. Hollyoaks fans can expect plenty of fireworks.’
The actress recently alluded to her new role during an appearance on Good Morning Britain, when she was pressed over a rumour around another soap.
‘I cannot tell you! When I have something to tell you, I will tell you. All I’ll say for now is I’ve left it so that the public finally understand Roxy may not be dead, so in the future, who knows?

‘But right now I’m really having a lovely time not there, and potentially going somewhere else. But the fans have been amazing and I did it for them.’
She certainly isn’t ruling out another future return to EastEnders either, with repeated calls from fans for a return from the dead.
‘I could come back because you didn’t see my body,’ she mused. ‘I did this for the fans, the fans own this show. It’s the fans’ show and I did it for them…’
Even at the time of her exit, Rita took extra steps to keep that door ever so slightly open, having, on advice, refused to film a coffin scene.
She indicated that many executives had been unhappy with the decision to axe the Mitchell sisters.
