Ed Sheeran gives rare insight into fatherhood as he gushes over his family

Ed Sheeran has gushed about his love of being a father to his two young daughters as he declared: "It's great being a girl dad".

The global singing superstar, 32, appeared on The Jonathan Ross Show on ITV as he promoted his new album, Subtract and latest single, Eyes Closed.

As Jonathan asked him about his two young daughters, Lyra, two, and Jupiter, 10 months, Ed, 32, sweetly said that he loves being a father to girls.

He said: "It's great. It's great being a girl dad. I just love having daughters. They're the best".

To which Jonathan asked if his children like his music and whether he sings to them.

With Ed sweetly sharing: "Yeah, actually, but very much, you know what kids are like, they kind of get obsessed with one thing and they want that over again.

"So they don't like the extensive catalogue but they might be like, play Shivers!"

He shares both daughters with his wife, Cherry Seaborn, who he married in 2019, after first meeting her in high school.

Ed also spoke candidly about his love for his wife, and how he wrote the track No Strings – which he regards as the best on the album – about getting through an incredibly tough year together.

Last year, Ed suffered the loss of his best friend Jamal Edwards, who died suddenly in February 2022.

Cherry was also diagnosed with a tumour whilst she was pregnant with Jupiter, and Ed went to court, where he won his High Court copyright battle over his hit song Shape of You

Speaking to Jonathan about the inspiration behind No Strings, Ed said: “2022 was a year of lots of things happening with me and my family and I sort of said to my wife, ‘If we can get through this, it’s a breeze from here. Anything can happen from here and we’re good.’”

He also discussed his grief at the passing of his longterm pal, Jamal, as he spoke fondly about how they first met over a decade ago.

Ed added: “I’ve got amazing memories of him that make me happy but also sad at the same time.”
