Emmerdale viewers know they’re in for a major shock this week as murderous Meena prepares to kill off her first victim. The shock exit of one of the soap's cast members will mean families are torn apart and lives are changed forever.
It’s fair to say that we’re all getting to know Meena a little better as she continues to manipulate those around her and reveal more of her calculating personality. But what about the actress who plays her?
Paige Sandhu is relatively quiet on social media, but she’s assured viewers that she’s nothing like the character she plays… thankfully!
“The best characters are the ones that are so far removed from yourself,” Paige explained “Her lack of empathy and her playfulness make her a very exciting character."
It’s also obvious from what Paige has said that she’s loving her current role on Emmerdale. The budding soap star admitted that she’d never played someone like Meena before.
“She’s the strangest character I’ve played for sure. But definitely the most fun,” Paige said.
She added: “It’s so much fun to play a character that is on a completely different wavelength to everyone else, who always has a hidden agenda and will do anything to get what she wants.”
Speaking of hidden agendas, Paige also revealed that she knew about Meena’s dark side as soon as she landed the part, but had to keep the top secret info under wraps from the rest of her cast mates.
“I knew from the very beginning where she was going to go and how dark she really is. It made it so much more fun to play knowing her secrets and what would unfold later,” she explained.
Paige continued: “It was quite a big shock but I was so up for it! When I first started other cast members would often ask me what was going to happen to my character and I had to keep it a secret from everyone. I think when they all found out they were very surprised.”
Since Paige’s personality is so far removed from her character’s killer instincts, the young actress admitted she had to do “loads” of research to try and get inside Meena’s head.
Page explained: “I’ve watched all of Killing Eve as there are a lot of similarities between Meena and Villanelle. Taxi Driver, American Psycho, Nightcrawler, Killer Women with Piers Morgan, Inside the Criminal Mind, I Psychopath and Psychopath with Piers Morgan. And I’m reading The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson.”
