Michael Douglas announces archive collection on his father’s life
Hollywood actor Michael Douglas is set to be awarded a highly prestigious award at the 76th annual Cannes Film Festival, which is due to take place from May 16-27, 2023.
The festival will pay a special tribute to the actor and will hand him the award during the Opening Ceremony on May 16.
Ahead of his attendance at the festival later this month, Michael expressed his gratitude for receiving the award and the festival itself.
He said: “It is always a breath of fresh air to be at Cannes, which has long provided a wonderful platform for bold creators, artistic audacities, and excellence in storytelling.”
The Basic Instinct star then recalled his “first time” at the festival in 1979 for The China Syndrome to his most recent premiere for Behind the Candelabra in 2013.
“The Festival has always reminded me that the magic of cinema is not just in what we see onscreen but in its ability to impact people all around the world.
“After more than 50 years in the business, it’s an honour to return to the Croisette to open the Festival and embrace our shared global language of film,” he added.
As part of the tribute, the festival will screen a previously unreleased documentary by Amine Mesta based on the producer titled Michael Douglas, The Prodigal Son, on the festival site for two days.
It will be available to watch by attendees from May 14 at 6pm to May 16 at 6pm.

The documentary was also produced by Folamour and will be broadcast on Arte.
The Fatal Attraction star has a long-running history with the festival, after first hitting the Croisette for the festival’s 32nd edition, for the premiere of The China Syndrome.
His co-stars Jane Fonda and Jack Lemmon also joined him alongside the film’s director James Bridges.
Then 13 years later, in 1992, Michael joined Sharon Stone and Dutch filmmaker on the Croisette to debut Basic Instinct, which screened in Competition.
The celebrated actor has received numerous accolades throughout his career, which spans over 50 years.
These awards include two Academy Awards in 1976 and 1988, five Golden Globe Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, the Cecil B DeMille Award, and the AFI Life Achievement Award.
Michael first achieved prominence for his performance in the ABC police procedural television series The Streets of San Francisco, for which he received three consecutive Emmy Award nominations.
The 76th annual Cannes Film Festival is due to take place from May 16-27, 2023.
