Nominations for the 2021 Academy Awards are in. Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas announced the nominees live in the early hours of March 15, 2021. With more than a month before the award show airs on April 25, 2021, there’s plenty of time to watch all eight films nominated for Best Picture.
‘The Father’
Based on a play of the same name, The Father follows Anthony Hopkins as a man who refuses any help from his daughter. While he tries to make sense of what’s happening, he questions his family, his own mind, and what’s real and imagined.
Hopkins stars in the drama alongside The Crown alum, Olivia Colman. Both actors are up for individual awards for their performances. Hopkins is nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role while Colman is nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
The Father is nominated for four additional Oscars, according to the official Oscars website, including Best Picture, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
The Father isn’t streaming on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video. The film hit theaters on Feb. 26, 2021, and will be available through premium video on demand starting March 26, 2021.
‘Judas and the Black Messiah’
Daniel Kaluuya portrays Fred Hampton, the chairman of the Black Panther Party, in Judas and the Black Messiah. Directed by Shaka King, the film chronicles Hampton’s assassination and FBI informant, William O’Neal (LaKeith Stanfield), infiltrating the Black Panther Party. The cast also includes Martin Sheen, Dominique Fishback, Ashton Sanders, and Jesse Plemons.
Judas and the Black Messiah is up for five Academy Awards besides Best Picture. Kaluuya and Stanfield are both nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. The film’s also nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Song for “Fight For You.”

‘Mank’
David Fincher’s Mank follows Herman J. Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman) in 1930s Hollywood as he wraps up filming on Citizen Kane. Filmed in black-and-white, Oldman’s Mank co-stars include Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Arliss Howard, Tom Pelphrey, Sam Troughton, Ferdinand Kingsley, Tuppence Middleton, Tom Burke, and Charles Dance.
Mank isn’t just up for Best Picture. The film landed nine other Oscar nominations: Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Oldman), Best Director (Fincher), Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Seyfried).
Mank is a Netflix original which means it’s available to watch for free with a subscription to the streaming service.
‘Minari’
A Korean family moves to Arkansas to start a farm in Minari. The movie follows the struggles of the entire family — grandma, parents, and children — as they embark on a new life. Steven Yeun and Han Ye-Ri play parents, Jacob and Monica, to their young son, David (Alan S. Kim). They live in a mobile home with David’s grandmother, Soonja (Yuh-jung Youn).
Like many of the other Best Picture nominees, Minari isn’t just nominated for one Academy Award. The film landed nominations in these five additional categories: Best Director (Lee Isaac Chung), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Youn), Best Original Score, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actor in a Leading Role (Yeun).

‘Nomadland’
Based on the book by Jessica Bruder, Nomadland follows Fern (Frances McDormand) as she travels across the American West after losing everything in the Great Recession.
Nomadland is up for five Academy Awards besides Best Picture. Chloé Zhao is up for Best Director after winning the same category at the 2021 Golden Globe Awards. ‘Promising Young Woman’
Remember Emerald Fennell as the future Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall on The Crown? She’s behind the camera in Promising Young Woman as writer and director. The film’s about Cassie (Carey Mulligan), a woman who seeks vengeance when she’s not leading a totally different life.
Promising Young Woman is nominated for four Oscars in addition to Best Picture. Fennell is nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director. Mulligan is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance. The film’s also nominated for Best Film Editing.

‘Sound of Metal’
Riz Ahmed is Ruben, a heavy-metal drummer who loses his hearing, in Sound of Metal. Ahmed stars in the Amazon Original movie alongside Olivia Cooke (Lou), Paul Raci (Joe), and more.

‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’
Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, The Trial of the Chicago 7 is based on the true story of seven men who were charged with crimes by the federal government following protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention.
The ensemble cast includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Sacha Baron Cohen, Daniel Flaherty, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Keaton, Frank Langella, John Carroll Lynch, Eddie Redmayne, Noah Robbins, Mark Rylance, Alex Sharp, Jeremy Strong, and Ben Shenkman.
