WWII nurse Claire Beauchamp (played by Caitriona Balfe) was thrown 200 years into the past in the first instalment of Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling Outlander series. As the wait for the highly anticipated sixth season of Starz’ small screen adaptation continues, a key clue from the original books may have solved one of the biggest mysteries surrounding Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

Outlander viewers are more convinced than ever that Jamie Fraser was the original catalyst for sending Claire Beauchamp back in time.

During the first season of the steamy historical series, Claire is magically pulled to the stones at Craigh Na Dun and transported from the 1940s to 18th Century Scotland.

She soon meets up with rugged Highlander Jamie, and is forced to lend her healing abilities to the injured Scottish warriors during the Battle of Culloden.

Back in Claire’s present, her husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) glimpses what appears to be Jamie’s ghost outside their window.

It’s commonly theorised that Jamie eventually develops the ability to travel through time, and may have planted the forget-me-nots to somehow ensure Claire finds her way to him in the 18th Century.

Meanwhile, as the sprawling saga continues on both the page and the screen, several fans have noted the direct reference to forget-me-nots surrounding the magical stones.

According to Gabaldon herself, these flowers are said to play a major role in the overall storyline, though haven’t been mentioned since.

However, one perceptive reader may have spotted a hidden moment of foreshadowing when Jamie’s uncle Colum MacKenzie (Gary Lewis) employs her as a healer in Castle Leoch.

Redditor MelodicDragonfruit8 posted: “In a reread of the first book, I’ve gotten to the part where she’s in Beaton’s old ‘clinic’ at Leoch, going through his jars of items.”

Though he doesn’t physically appear in the books or television series, the physician Davie Beaton plays a major role in Book One, as Claire takes over his surgery.

When she cleans out the old dungeon and stakes stock of Beaton’s medical supplies, she stumbles across what could be a key clue to her unexpected trip through time.

The fan’s theory went on: “One jar is marked ‘mouse ears’.

“And in the book Claire tosses them aside as actual mouse ears -which I suppose she would be able to tell whether they were or not.”

Believing the jar to be filled with dried up rodents, Claire carelessly throws away what may have been a crucial link to her destiny with Jamie Fraser.

As this fan explained, the ‘mouse ears’ in question are actually a type of flower very similar to the mysterious forget-me-nots surrounding the stones at Craigh Na Dun.

They continued: “I just found out today that forget-me-nots are in the Boraginaceae family, and that name stems from the Ancient Greek word for ‘mouse ears’ – because of the shape of the flower’s petals.”

“So, I was just wondering – could these ‘mouse ears’ have been yet another nod to forget-me-nots?”

Flowers known as Myosotis, part of the Boraginaceae family and so named because of their resemblance to mouse ears, are often confused for forget-me-nots, and are both part of the Myosotidium genus.

To put it simply, Jamie may have known about his uncle’s proximity to the surgery and travelled back to Castle Leoch, taken some forget-me-not seeds and planted them at Craigh Na Dun.

If theories are correct, this would have triggered a response in Claire, pulling her back through time and ensuring her destined meeting with Jamie remained intact.

Outlander is available to watch on STARZ and Amazon Prime.
