Starz’s Raising Kanan finally made its highly anticipated comeback on Sunday with Kanan Stark (played by Mekai Curtis) and his queenpin mother Raq Thomas (Patina Miller) returning to screens after a jaw-dropping ending. Actress Patina Miller spoke exclusively to express.co.uk and provided insight into her character’s fate.

Season one provided fans with an insight into the upbringing of Kanan Stark who was first introduced in the show’s original series Power.

Throughout the series, viewers saw how a Kanan (Mekai Curtis) went from an innocent 15-year-old and got his start in the drug business.

It was revealed his mother Raq was the person who showed him the ropes as she taught him how to shoot a gun and make cocaine.

However, things took a dark turn at the end of season one after Kanan followed her instructions to shoot Detective Malcolm Howard (Omar Epps)

The episode came to an end with Kanan in hiding as the city went on lockdown as the police tried to hunt down the person who shot one of their own.

He also questioned Raq’s intentions, motives and whether he could truly trust her.

Fans who watched Power would be aware Kanan (50 Cent) was a troubled character whose mother had died.

With Raq’s death on the cards, many have predicted Kanan could be the one to pull the trigger, however with the return of the series and Raq and her son on good terms, the actress Patina opened up on her character’s fate.

Speaking to Express.co.uk Patina revealed: “Her goal is to leave something, her legacy for her family, but more so if she gets knocked down, she’s gonna get back up.

“And you’re gonna see that grit, that determination, that passion, that, like, ferociousness.”

The actress added: “She’s a fighter and she’s a survivor. It’s what she is and it’s she’s always done and don’t ever count her out.”

As a hardened no-nonsense queenpin, Raq was fierce as she was often the only woman dealing with men.

In order to be taken seriously, she had to show violence and grit, which was why she had Kanan shoot Detective Howard.

After a groundbreaking revelation, viewers learnt Howard was Kanan’s biological father and he was threatening to reveal the truth.

Raq warned Kanan about this and put it down to insanity, before deciding to make an attempt at his life.

However, it was revealed that Howard survived the shooting.

After Kanan spent the summer in hiding, he returned to discover the officer was still alive, but he had no recollection of the night.

Although the teenager appeared to be in the clear, Howard made it clear he was still eager to pursue a relationship with Kanan.

Raq was also facing issues with her business and leadership struggles with her brother, fans will have to stay tuned to see if she will stay at the top of her game.
