Johannes Radebe made history as part of the first all-male same-sex pairing for Strictly Come Dancing. So far the professional and his partner John Whaite have thrilled the judges and viewers with their performance. Johannes revealed his mother was also a huge fan of the partnership and left him in tears with her compliments.
Speaking on It Takes Two, host Janette Manrara remarked: “So Shirley [Ballas] said, ‘There is nothing John cannot do,’ which is an incredible compliment.
“How does it make you feel as his partner to hear them say that?”
“I can’t tell you Janette because my mother sent me a message back home from South Africa,” Johannes replied.
“She said, ‘Isn’t it nice to have a partner that matches you in strength.
“I bawled and I was like, ‘I’m actually going to tell John this.’ My mum loves the show and watches it, and for her to say that, it is the biggest compliment to what he’s doing, I can’t tell you.”
Janette exclaimed: “That is amazing. I just love the two of you.”
However the former pro quickly moved things along: “Anton though John is saying he wants you to believe in yourself more, he wants you to go out there and just let yourself go and like you said, you thought you got there on Saturday night but do you still feel a bit of imposter syndrome?”
“There’s a little niggle in my head saying you know, ‘You can’t do this,’ but ‘Not today Satan,’ is what I’m going to say,” John replied.
Janette continued: “You got 31, higher than the week before. How did that make you feel because that’s exciting, you’re going up!”
“There’s a trajectory isn’t there?” John answered. “But I don’t want to peak too soon.
“I want to learn, I want to listen to what the judges say, take on board their critiques and I just want to get their gradually. I don’t want to peak too soon and then flop.”
Johannes and John were left gobsmacked when Years and Years singer Olly Alexander sent a good luck message for Saturday’s show.
Olly told the pair: “Hi John and Johannes. Oh my gosh, thank you so much for choosing Starstruck for your Cha Cha.
“I absolutely love watching you guys, I’m so happy you’re in this competition.
“Keep killing it and I’m just going to send you all my love. Best of luck. Have the best night. Thank you!”
John has previously revealed he’s found training for the competition difficult.
Speaking on Steph’s Packed Lunch, he detailed: “Sometimes the days are stressful and we have to take a few more breaks.
“Last week when we were learning the steps, I was getting really stressed … I glaze over.”
Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday on BBC One at 6.45pm.
