The fifth season of The Handmaid’s Tale came to an explosive conclusion on Hulu back in November with heartbreaking separations and jaw-dropping reunions. Therefore, it’s inevitable fans are itching to see how season six will address the ongoing June (played by Elisabeth Moss) and Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) feud as well as Gilead’s future.
However, a new report from SpoilerTV has suggested that those hoping for a 2023 release could be in for some disappointing news.
Moss’s work diary away from The Handmaid’s Tale was always going to look rather busier after she landed a role in FX series, The Veil, earlier this year.
The Veil promises to be an unmissable limited series with Peaky Blinders mastermind Steven Knight at the helm and Moss leading the show on-screen.
However, according to the newly released scheduling report, The Veil won’t begin production until spring next year.
The Handmaid’s Tale season six, on the other hand, is yet to receive a confirmed start date.
Instead, the schedule states the stage at which the next series is currently at is “active development”.
Sadly for The Handmaid’s Tale fans, The Veil also doesn’t have an end date for its shoot.
But it’s safe to presume that if Moss begins work on the new FX series in the spring, this will likely take up her work diary up deep into the summer or even autumn.
With Moss an integral part of the Hulu drama, The Handmaid’s Tale season six won’t enter production or begin filming until she’s available.
Should this be late summer or autumn next year, it would take an almighty feat for the new episode to air in the same year.
After all, The Handmaid’s Tale isn’t the type of show to skimp on high-octane action sequences and elaborate set designs.
So corner-cutting, in order to get the new episodes onto screens in 2023, isn’t a likely solution.

This would make 2023 the second year since The Handmaid’s Tale began in 2017 for no new episodes to air.
Back in 2020, fans went without a new season and had to wait almost two years for season four to arrive.
While seasons one and two debuted on Hulu in the USA in April of 2017 and 2018, respectively, season three bucked the trend with a June 2019 premiere.
And then it wasn’t until April 2021 that season four arrived, with the fifth run landing almost 18 months later in September 2022.
While Moss has, of course, had other work commitments during that time, The Veil would be only her second other recurring role away from The Handmaid’s Tale.
Moss did also appear in Apple TV’s Shining Girls last year while juggling her role in the Hulu drama.
For now, fans wanting their Gilead fix will have to rewatch the first five seasons until concrete news of season six comes to light.
The Handmaid’s Tale seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Hulu in the USA and All 4 and Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
