HBO viewers shared a common complaint about the first season of The Last of Us as fans commented on the “small amount” of infected throughout the series. But now the show’s co-creator has assured viewers that the upcoming second season will feature “a lot more”.
Season one of The Last of Us followed Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they crossed a post-apocalyptic United States.
The video game adaptation saw the pair’s journey to safety as they avoided altercations with the zombies, created by a mind-controlling fungus.
Fans just weren’t satisfied with the amount of “action” throughout all nine episodes, with some saying the show’s infected interactions were “boring”.
Taking to Twitter, viewer @thenthenthethat wrote: “The show has been my first experience with The Last of Us and I can’t lie I think the infected was really kinda boring.”
Agreeing, @ElijahGoKenji added: “I wish we got more infected, not whole episodes, but just little segments sprinkled in throughout the episodes.”
User @AshyrBrom explained: “The show needed more infected threats for the cure to matter.”
Season one wrapped on Sunday and attracted record numbers of viewers, but bosses are already telling fans the next season can only be “better”.
Speaking in a press conference after last weekend’s finale, co-creator Craig Mazin addressed the elephant in the room, the lack of infected.
“So, we did at times have choices to make about how we wanted to present the infected,” he detailed.
“Even though we were green lit for a season of television, [we] felt like we can’t just make a season of television without considering what would come after.
“There is more The Last of Us to come. I think the balance is not always just about within an episode or even episode to episode, but season to season.
“It’s quite possible that there will be a lot more infected later and perhaps different kinds.”

Further discussing the show on HBO’s The Last of Us Podcast, Mazin talked about what role the infected will play in season two.
He explained that the Cordyceps hive mind concept and its intricate “interconnectivity” will be further explored.
Mazin said: “And that, I will say, is something that I think we will be exploring further in the next season.
“I think this first time around, we were learning so much about how to create the Infected and how to televise them in a way that was exciting and didn’t seem goofy or weird or artificial.
“I think we figured out that. I think this next season, the interconnectivity of them, and the risk of stepping on the wrong thing, that stuff is going to be brought forward more for sure.”
Season one’s finale saw Joel deliver Ellie to the Fireflies before stealing her back, later telling her a lie about what had gone down.
After escaping from the hospital, he was cornered by Marlene in a car park. She warned him that he could have saved the world.
But Joel couldn’t give Ellie up and would try to keep protecting her.
The Last of Us is streaming on HBO Max and NOW.
