Jay Blades on making the transition to TV
Speaking in a new interview, Jay Blades said he was at “rock bottom” six years ago as he opened up about not being able to read.
The Repair Shop expert, who will star in a new BBC programme called Jay Blades: Learning to Read at 51, admitted to making up excuses about why he couldn’t fill in a form.
He went on to add that he would often say he’d forgotten his glasses in the hopes someone else could fill in the form for him.
“It hasn’t impacted [my life] that much. [Reading means] more opportunities for me. Anything is possible,” Jay shared.
“Look at six years ago, I was on rock bottom, and then to be where I am six years later… having a TV documentary, being on a very successful show, it’s insane. It’s possible, it really is possible.”

He added to PA: “No matter where you are in your life, no matter what you think you can’t achieve, there are some people that are out there ready to support you.
“It can take you places that you could never imagine.”
The dad-of-three described his struggles with reading as like “having a book of ants” as he opened up about his condition.
The Repair Shop star said: “What I see is, it’s like having a book of ants. So the letters are all ants, and they just keep on moving around. So you try and hold them down.

When Jay isn’t filming for The Repair Shop or his other TV projects, he is very active on social media and often interacts with his fans.
He also shares behind-the-scenes content from The Repair Shop barn.
In his latest video, Jay answered one of his fans’ questions on his social media channel in a segment titled, Ask Jay Anything.
Reading out the question, Jay said: “How did you make the transition from being an enthusiastic furniture maker and interior designer to TV?”
“I don’t know,” he replied. “You guys have to tell me that. I don’t know how I made that transition.
“That transition. I think I’m still doing it. I remember when they first approached me to be on TV, I was like, ‘Okay, cool. I can do this’.
“I said, ‘So how do you want me to be?’ and they said, ‘To just be yourself’.
“And as I was allowed to be myself, it was just like, that’s all I did.”
