Julian and his co-star Peter Wright have become firm favourites on The Yorkshire Vet since it began in 2015. The Channel 5 series follows the veterinarians as they tend to animals in need at their practices in North Yorkshire. Despite being used to filming under pressure, Julian explained there have been moments when he has been bitten and kicked by the animals he is examining.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk about what it is like filming with animals, Julian began: “We have to have some kind of control over our patients to some extent because we wouldn’t be able to examine it.
“We wouldn’t be able to inject it and we wouldn’t be able to find out what’s wrong with it.
“So, there’s always an element of control which is the nature of the job, but it doesn’t always go the plan.
“Animals escape and sometimes we get kicked. Sometimes we get bitten and sometimes rabbits jump off the table.”
During last week’s episode of The Yorkshire Vet, Julian suffered a mishap with a pig.
The instalment saw owner Joy bring her pet pig, Pigley Scott, into the surgery to be castrated as he had been getting amorous with her dogs.
However, things didn’t quite go to plan for Julian during the surgery.
The vet ended up injecting himself with local anaesthetic leaving him with a numb thumb.
Julian recently opened his own veterinary practice in Wetherby with his wife after making the difficult decision to leave Skeldale.
The vet worked at the Yorkshire practice for more than two decades before he made his departure.
Skeldale had been the original practice of world-famous vet James Herriot author of All Creatures Great and Small author Alf Wight.
However, Julian felt it was the right time to go as the practice was merged with a national veterinarian organisation.
Discussing his departure, Julian explained he had no intention to leave.
He continued: “I left Skeldale after working there for most of my working career.
“And then the practice was taken over, which wasn’t really part of my plan, or intention.
“I didn’t really want to be working with that kind of corporate style structure.”
“So, I left at that point and worked elsewhere but recently I’ve opened two practices,” Julian added.
The 49-year-old went on address his future on the show, as he admitted he will remain on the show “as long as it’s still fun”.
He explained: “I don’t know, I mean we’ll see. There is talk of the series beyond series 13.
“I guess I think as long as it’s still fun to be involved with and as long as it’s not too time-consuming and too onerous and the stress is not too much.”
The Yorkshire Vet airs on Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 5.
