With fans excited to get finally get back out to theaters, the recent trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home has Marvel fans chomping at the bit to see what adventures the iconic web-slinger will have in his third solo outing. The trailer confirmed some long-time rumors that the film would be incorporating elements of previous Spider-Man film franchises.
While it did leave some questions unanswered, it left fans plenty eager to head over to the box office in December and pick up their tickets for the movie. Fans may need to be cautious, though. With the Delta variant of the coronavirus (COVID-19) continuing to spread like wildfire, Spider-Man: No Way Home may, like many other movies, fall victim to even more delays due to the pandemic.
The upcoming ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ film
Spider-Man: No Way Home is one of the most long-awaited titles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The cliffhanger that fans were left within 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home promised a bombshell plotline with long-term implications for Peter Parker. Adding to the suspense of how Peter would deal with the aftermath of his identity being exposed, rumors abounded throughout the film’s production that villains from the early 2000s Sam Raimi Spider-Man franchise may make an appearance. Over the months leading up to the trailer, it was even whispered that Spidey alums Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield might be reprising their roles as the titular web-slinger.
While the trailer definitely revealed that fans would see some familiar villains, it left them hanging about variant Spider-Men. However, with a release date in December, most fans are willing to wait a few more months in suspense.
Will ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ be delayed
In early August, Sony announced that it would delay Venom: Let There Be Carnage a month from its original release date in September, according to Inside the Magic. With Sony also at the helm of Spider-Man: No Way Home, this immediately prompted concerns that it too would be delayed to the increased risk of coronavirus transmission from the Delta variant.
While the trailer has recently been released, many fans pointed to the lack of a trailer for the film less than three months before its scheduled release as a major red flag for a possible delay, according to Yahoo. With a release date of Dec. 17, the film is timed to be a big holiday blockbuster. This means that any delay to the film’s release may push it back as far as summer for marketing reasons.
Most fans are eager to have the theater experience again with their favorite superheroes and fellow fans. No Way Home could, however, potentially end up releasing on Disney+ to avoid delays. It was highly controversial when Black Widow was released with simultaneous premium access on Disney+ and theatrically releases. Still, it did result in many people who would be unable to see the film due to coronavirus being able to enjoy it sooner.
At any rate, fans can be thankful that the film still has not deviated from its December release date so far. BGR recently reported that rumors coming from insiders indicate there’s a strong possibility of a delay. Still, Sony has yet to confirm that any delay will occur as the release date quickly approaches.
Delayed releases continue
After 2020 wreaked havoc on many anticipated films and beloved franchises, many fans were hoping that 2021 was the year that they could return to the unique experience that theatrical releases provide. Despite widespread vaccination in many parts of the country, outbreaks of the Delta variant have continued to cause many delays in the movie industry.
The recent delays of films like Jackass Forever, Top Gun: Maverick and Clifford the Big Red Dog indicate that the coronavirus is still at the forefront of these studios’ minds regarding big releases. Unexpected delays can be catastrophic to the marketing efforts and the pockets of major productions, so delays don’t tend to happen unless it’s necessary.
Hopefully, that won’t be the case for Spider-Man: No Way Home and fans can come together in theaters to experience it together this holiday season. The pandemic has left many people feeling like they’re removed from their communities. Still, it’s easy to feel like every other fan is a neighbor when you’re all rooting for the same friendly neighborhood Spider-Man together. Everybody could use that right now, and hopefully, Spider-Man fans get it in December.
