BBC viewers will tune in to watch the final episode of Vigil on Sunday night as they finally find out whether DCI Amy Silva (played by Suranne Jones) catches her killer. Over the past few weeks, DCI Silva has been onboard nuclear submarine, Vigil where she has been trying to find out who killed Craig Burke (Martin Compston). Viewers have watched as more murders take place on the submarine and at the end of last week’s episode, they feared for DCI Silva, who was left trapped and left to die by the culprit Matthew Doward (Lorne MacFadyen).
The first episode of the BBC drama, which aired at the beginning of the month, saw the death of Compston’s character – which caused an uproar with fans.
Viewers could not believe why the creator killed off the Line of Duty star so soon.
However, in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk and other press at a recent Q&A, showrunner Tom Edge responded to the backlash from viewers.
When asked whether it was “fun” for him to set that storyline up for the audience, Tom joked: “I think Wild Productions is almost developing a reputation for killing their leads.”
He continued: “Next time you see an ensemble cast that will be mown down within 10 seconds of the first episode.
“I mean for that role we were just incredibly lucky that Martin agreed to do it.
“There was a very limited amount of screen time for that character, so you needed someone who was going to make a real impact.
“And where their death will kind of stay with you for a while.”
“You want those echoes to kind of run through things and I think he does stay with us,” Tom added.
“And without getting into spoiler territory (he is a) sort of kind of ghost that hangs over proceedings.
“So, we knew we needed someone really great to do that and so, we’re very grateful.”
The finale of Vigil will conclude on Sunday and viewers will see if justice is done for Craig Burke.

However, the actress who plays DCI Silva has teased how the series ends.
“That’s the bold thing about the show,” Suranne said to Express.co.uk and other press at an exclusive Q&A.
“That it is about human stories and like I said, it is so busy with content.
“It’s a bold show, with two female leads. It has a romantic story but the thrills that come to the last episode were amazing and quite shocking.”
“I have never seen something like this before,” she added.
Speaking her character, Suranne explained: “She’s complex, and not afraid to show who’s boss.
“Amy is complicated, modern and quite vulnerable when we first meet her.
“To say she feels claustrophobic and caught in a boy’s world when aboard Vigil is an understatement. I think she does really well.”
Vigil is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
