The massive mobile real-time strategy game Rise of Kingdoms has finally added the Vikings to its roster of playable civilisations. History Channel star Alexander Ludwig recently appeared in the new TV commercial for the game, leading some viewers to believe he had reprised his role as Bjorn Ironside for a surprise Vikings revival.
Bjorn Ironside (played by Alexander Ludwig) has made his long awaited TV return after Vikings’ sixth season wrapped up last year on Amazon Prime Video.
Despite playing an integral part of Vikings since the second season, Bjorn was slain near the start of the show’s highly anticipated second half of season six.
Even so, series lead Alexander Ludwig has remained a prominent figurehead of the series after succeeding his father, Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) as the ruler of Kattegat.
In a new promotion for the mobile game Rise of Kingdoms, Ludwig made a brief return to his star-making Vikings role.
The multi-million downloaded strategy game cast the star in their new ad to let players know the Vikings are finally playable in the app’s ever-expanding virtual world.
Ludwig returns as a more suburban version of his character, bearing a striking resemblance to Bjorn when he’s mistaken as a Viking warrior.
Despite his protests, Ludwig’s neighbour is convinced he’s ‘that Viking guy’ when he’s spotted rowing, chopping wood and drinking from a horn.
‘Bjorn’ finally gives in and threatens to send the nosy neighbour to the gods, and tells him he doesn’t have the facial hair to join his Viking alliance.

Once the new commercial had aired in the US, Ludwig posted the clip himself on his recent Instagram post.
He captioned the video: “Hey… Aren’t YOU that Viking! Had great fun shooting this for @riseofkingdoms … Really cool game, hope to see you guys there.”
Alexander Ludwig’s reprisal was so convincing that, before they realised what the advert was for, some viewers believed Vikings could be coming back for a surprise seventh season.
On Ludwig’s Instagram post, one follower commented: “Stop. I thought this was a Vikings return… my heart skipped a beat.”

Thankfully, fans do have more Vikings content to look forward to, as the upcoming sequel series Vikings: Valhalla is due to arrive on Netflix later this year.
Set 100 years after the events of the original series, the spin-off will sadly not feature the likes of Ludwig’s Bjorn Ironside or Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick).
However, Vikings fans who haven’t been convinced to download Rise of Kingdoms yet have a reason to celebrate, as both Ragnar and Bjorn are now playable with the new expansion.
An official statement from the game confirmed: “Players can now choose which storied leader guides them into battle between the Viking Kings Björn Ironside and Ragnar Lodbrok.
“Steeped in Norse mythology, these two mighty warrior kings give their armies a buff to their counterattack power.”
While Bjorn won’t be returning for real anytime soon, fans can catch Alexander Ludwig in his new series, Heels, which is coming to Starz in August this year.
Vikings seasons 1-6 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. Rise of Kingdoms is available to download for free on iOS and Android.
