From 1993 to 1999, Lauren Lane portrayed C.C. Babcock in the hit sitcom The Nanny. Babcock was Broadway producer Maxwell Sheffield’s business partner. She boasted a combative dynamic with Butler Niles for most of the series, as they were always trying to one-up each other with insults. And, Babcock didn’t exactly value the energy Nanny Fine (Fran Drescher) brought into the Sheffield household. Yet, where has Lane been since The Nanny ended? What has she been up to?
Lauren Lane mostly stepped away from the screen after ‘The Nanny’
After The Nanny, Lane stepped away from the small-screen, and according to Entertainment Weekly, she “retired” from television two years following the show’s finale.
Lane appeared in a few other on-screen productions following the sitcom — Partners (1999), The Cutting Room (2001 short), and Dress Code (2019 short). In 2004, she joined the rest of her former cast members for the one-hour Lifetime special: The Nanny Reunion: A Nosh to Remember.
Lane has since dedicated most of her career to performing live, and she has also become a full-time lecturer.
Lauren Lane theatrical appearances and work at Texas State University
Since 2000, Lane has been starring in various shows at the Zachary Scott Theatre Center (AKA ZACH Theatre) in Austin, Texas. The theatre company is the oldest in the state, and one of the 10 oldest in the entire country.
Lane has appeared in several well-known plays, including but not limited to The Vagina Monologues, Dinner with Friends, The Clean House, House of Several Stories, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Harvey, and more.
When Lane is not performing, she’s lecturing at Texas State University in San Marcos, where she is on the Department of Theatre and Dance faculty. Yet, in 2013, she briefly taught at Carnegie Mellon University — which has gone on to produce several Hollywood A-listers, including Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Holly Hunter, Rob Marshall, Josh Groban, and more.
Lane has the education and the expertise needed to teach, as she received her BFA from the University of Texas at Arlington and received her Master’s Degree in the advanced training program at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. While we miss C.C. Babcock, Lane is still performing and she’s teaching young hopefuls how to to take to the stage and the screen.
