Anyone who was in the area between 08:30 and 09:20 BST on Saturday has been asked to contact the force.
BBC Radio Derby executive editor Aftab Gulzar told the BBC that Mr Carey, who was also known as Mike, had an ‘incredible life’.
The former presenter also worked as a national cricket correspondent and was an author.
Mr Gulzar described Mr Carey as a ‘constant professional’ at work.
‘He was a reserved man but if you got him on to some subjects like music, cricket or his dogs, then you’d be there chewing the fat for some time,’ he said.
Sports journalist Charles Collins said that he previously met Mr Carey when he joined BBC Radio Derby in 2002, becoming ‘great mates’ in the process.
Mr Collins paid tribute to Mr Carey’s storytelling, due to the fact ‘he knew everybody in Debyshire’.
‘When I was covering Derbyshire cricket, I could check any story just by ringing Mike,’ he said.
