A FORMER prison officer, who worked with some of the UK's most feared men, has revealed the big mistake he made in his first month on the job.
Phil Currie, said that his time as a trainee officer saw him nearly get into trouble with one of Britain's most dangerous lags.
Phil, who worked at high-security prisons including HMP Parkhurst and HMP Long Larkin, revealed his run in with murderer Andrew Rodger on James English's YouTube show.
He recalled how Rodger was one of the most "powerful" men he ever met in prison, even managing to rip a cell door of its hinges "with his bare hands".
However, the pair nearly came to blows over an unusual subject – chips.
Phil explained that he was told to man the hot plate and give out chips to the prisoners at meal time.

He said: "So I'm on chips and I'm dishing the chips out…and you haven't really got time to be checking everybody so I just scoop, on the plate, getting ready for the next scoop.
"Unbeknown to me, Andy's coming through.
"So I get a scoop of chips, put them on his plate, getting ready for the next one and he's still stood there looking at me.
"And he goes 'are you f***ing counting those?'"

However, Phil's reply left the dining hall in a stunned silence.
He said that he told the notoriously violent Rodger, that didn't "have time" to count the chips and that he should "move along".
He added: "The whole hot plate just went quiet, the prisoners froze and I'm thinking 'I might have picked the wrong one here'.
"Anyway he walked out and walked off…and the officer next to me said 'you don't know how f***ing lucky you are'."
Phil's colleague then told him that Rodger was well-known for"smashing the hot plate up" over food, adding: "I don't know how you got away with that."
All ended well though, as Phil recalled that he and Rodger laughed about the near-miss year's later, with the lag letting him know that his remark did "p*** him off", he knew there was "no malice" in it.
Rodger would go on to escape Parkhurst in 1995 along with Keith Rose and Matthew Williams.
The trio used their DT skills to produce a homemade gun and a key to the prison's doors and gates.
During their designated exercise time they waited until the guards were distracted and opened the back door of the yard and walked out.
They then cut a hole in the inner fence and used a steel ladder to get over the outer fence and they were finally free… for all of four days before they were caught, hiding in a shed.

As for Phil, he went on to enjoy a long career as a prison officer, including befriending 'Britain's most dangerous prisoner' Charles Bronson.
He has previously revealed what he and Bronson would talk about behind bars, as well as the man who was just as terrifying as the famous armed robber.
