Families who soaked up the heatwave earlier today on UK beaches can expect more of the same tomorrow as children return to school.
After a somewhat gloomy summer, the start of autumn is bringing brighter days as the Met Office predict ‘very warm or hot sunshine’ this week.
Temperatures are also set to soar to 90F as some parts of the UK will hit the official criteria needed for a heatwave tomorrow.
Forecasters say a jet stream – which has been bringing largely unsettled spells of weather to the UK – is continuing to shift north, allowing higher pressure to build widely across the UK.
It also explains a second reason for the heatwave: the former tropical cyclone Franklin continuing to move into the north Atlantic, amplifying the build-up of high pressure.

The Met Office forecast says ‘very warm, locally hot, and settled weather is likely to continue for much of the UK’ but there will be some ‘isolated thunderstorms’. Occasional rain is possible in the far north, however.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Chris Bulmer, said ‘fine and settled conditions will develop and along with this we will see a rise in temperature across most parts of the UK next week’.

He added: ‘Many places can expect to see maximum temperatures rise to 25C or above for several days, which would bring some locations into the realm of heatwave conditions.
‘Although the highest temperatures are likely to be in the south and east of England, these areas also have higher temperature thresholds for heatwave conditions to be declared.
‘So, while some areas may just miss out on the actual definition, regardless of thresholds, many areas will enjoy a fine period of weather with plenty of sunshine and temperatures are likely to be the highest for many since June or early July.
Met Office senior operational meteorologist Amy Bokota added: ‘Most places are going to see wall-to-wall sunshine by the middle of the week, which is something we haven’t seen for much of the summer.
‘It’s going to feel warmer than we would expect for the start of autumn, particularly in London and the South East, where the heatwave threshold could be met.
‘But it will also feel humid and muggy in some areas, with temperatures in parts of the country staying above 20C (68F) overnight, making for uncomfortable sleeping conditions.’

Warm and sunny weather extended across the country over the weekend with beachgoers flocking to seaside spots from Bournemouth in the south of England to resorts in the north.
Seaburn Beach in Sunderland was packed with families rounding off the school holidays in the sunshine.
Surfers and swimmers took to the North Sea as the balmy temperatures, while others brought buckets and spades to play on the beach.
