Morrisons customers' cars damaged after petrol at supermarket garage was contaminated with WATER

FURIOUS shoppers at Morrisons have vented their fury after they filled their cars up with contaminated petrol at the supermarket, with their vehicles then breaking down just moments later.

Locals in Kendal, Cumbria, took to social media yesterday to ask others if they were having problems with their cars after purchasing petrol from the store in Queen Katherines Avenue.

One customer took to Facebook and said: "I don't suppose anyone has had any issues with Morrisons fuel tonight?

"Just filled up and a mile down the road my car broke down. Maybe a coincidence but was fine before I fuelled it??"

Within minutes several motorists were raising the same issue on social media, and also sharing how this is not the first time Morrisons may have sold contaminated petrol to its customers.

Another said: "Be careful if filling up at Morrisons, a few cars have broken down after filling up with unleaded."

The Sun Online has now spoken to two affected customers whose cars broke down shortly after filling up at the station with unleaded.

They both did not wish to be named while pursuing compensation from the store.

The first customer said: "As soon as I left it started, it nearly cut out but managed to carry on.

"Then every time I stopped, it nearly cut out. I just thought it was a problem with my car until I saw it on Facebook.

"To save damage further Morrisons told me not to drive."

AA workers in the area also told him today that he was the third customer so far who had reported issues with their car after filling up at the station.

However 25 shoppers are thought to have had their cars filled with the contaminated petrol.

Another customer – a car service worker – said he expects the works to cost thousands of pounds.

He added: "I filled up last night and broke down around a mile away from the petrol station. I suspect its water in the fuel.

"It could do thousands of pounds worth of damage if there is a lot of water.

"But if it's just a small amount you should be able to drain the tank and replace a couple of serviceable parts for around £200 to £400."

A Morrisons spokesman said: "Water was detected in one our unleaded tanks yesterday.

"As soon as we became aware of the problem, the pumps were shut down.

"We estimate that approximately 25 cars have been affected. Anyone who thinks they have taken some of the contaminated fuel should call our Kendal store on 01539 734554.

"We apologise to these motorists for any inconvenience that this has caused, and are passing their details to the AA who will carry out any necessary repairs."
