Spy chiefs say Russia were responsible for Sergei Skripal attack using poison so rare spy boffins haven't found it

SPY chiefs have briefed Theresa May that Russia is the prime suspect for the attack on Sergei Skripal, using a rare and almost untraceable poison on him.

The PM summoned the heads of MI5 and MI6 to No10 for an emergency briefing of her National Security Council yesterday afternoon.

The government rapidly upgraded its response to the poisoning of the 66-year-old Russian double agent and his daughter Yulia once terror cops took over and the sophistication of the suspected hit job became clear.

Preliminary toxicology tests by military scientists at secret research centre Porton Down ruled out nuclear material or a nerve agent.

But last night they were still unable to “definitively” identify the poison.

The Sun can reveal that suspicion is focusing on a hybrid version of the heavy metal  poison Thallium.
