Murdered Texas boy, 4, was randomly targeted in ‘evil’ act by suspect who stole him while he was asleep

The suspect accused of snatching a sleeping Dallas boy who was later found dead allegedly tried to kidnap another child just months earlier, authorities said.

Darriyn Brown, 18, who is charged with kidnapping 4-year-old Cash Gernon earlier this month, is facing counts of burglary of a habitation and injury to an elderly person in the Feb. 8 incident, according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by the KTVT.

Brown is accused of barging into a man’s home months before Gernon was found dead, prompting a homeowner to grab a knife and demand he leave, the affidavit states.

The man managed to get Brown out, but the teen returned and started kicking a door between the home and its garage, forcing the homeowner to open the door – when Brown allegedly punched him in the head, according to the affidavit.

Brown then allegedly walked into a living room and grabbed the man’s 2-year-old granddaughter as she slept. The teen started to walk away with the toddler, but the man was able rip the child from his grasp, the affidavit states.

The girl’s grandfather told cops the girl was “startled and began crying when she awoke to Brown holding her,” according to the report.

The homeowner did not want to press charges at the time, but saw Brown weeks later at a Walmart, where the teen apologized for what happened, the station reported.

“He was sorry for breaking into the house and trying to take his grandchild,” the man told police.

Three days after Cash was found dead on a Dallas street while wearing only a pair of shorts, the homeowner met with child abuse detectives to say he now wanted to press charges in the incident, KTVT reported.

Brown, who has been described as an acquaintance of the ex-girlfriend of Cash’s father, is facing charges of burglary of a habitation and kidnapping in the boy’s abduction. Investigators have said they expect to file a capital murder charge against him following a forensic analysis, the Dallas Morning News reported.

He remained held Friday at the Dallas County Jail on $1,625,000 bail, records show.

Video shows the moment Brown allegedly abducted the boy from his Texas bedroom before returning to the home and hovering over the toddler’s twin brother, Carter.

A jogger found Cash’s body on May 15. The boy was stabbed multiple times with an “edged weapon,” police said.
