Over the weekend it was revealed that billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott had quietly remarried.
Scott, one of the richest women in the world, was previously wed to one of the world’s well-known billionaires, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
But her new husband, Seattle teacher Dan Jewett, was apparently toiling away in a classroom before news broke of their union.
So who exactly is Dan Jewett?
Jewett most recently taught science at Lakeside School, a prestigious private school in Seattle attended by Scott’s children, according to The Washington Post.
It’s unclear if Jewett is still employed at the school, as his name does not appear in the faculty directory. But during his time there, he met Scott, according to the report.
Earlier in his career, from 2011 to 2016, Jewett worked as a Science teacher at The Bush School, also in Seattle, PEOPLE reported.
And before that, he taught Chemistry at a Pennsylvania high school, one of his former students told the magazine.
“He was involved, energetic, passionate, friendly, gregarious in a really earnest way,” Josh Verlin told the outlet.
Verlin said Jewett was his teacher at Harriton High School in Bryn Mawr during the 2006 school year.
“He so clearly loved what he was doing, loved teaching and loved science, and enjoyed working with the students… He was very engaging, and you wanted to be in his class.”
His life with MacKenzie Scott
In his shared Giving Pledge with Scott, Jewett acknowledges that “I have been a teacher for the majority of my life, as well as a grateful student of the generosity of those around me.”
But since wedding Scott, who’s worth over $50 billion, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index, the teacher-by-trade seems to be focusing on helping his wife’s philanthropic efforts.
“And now, in a stroke of happy coincidence, I am married to one of the most generous and kind people I know—and joining her in a commitment to pass on an enormous financial wealth to serve others,” Jewett wrote in his pledge.
Scott, in his pledge, described his luck with connecting with people of all walks of life.
“Recognizing how much I have to learn from those unlike me has led me to a partner similarly inclined. I have seen many ways that MacKenzie has seen her efforts enhanced when she acts on the belief that those with common values but different perspectives, strengths, and experiences are essential to effecting positive change,” he wrote in his pledge.
“With that as a foundation, I join with the kindest and most thoughtful person I know in making this pledge, grateful for the exceptional privilege it will be to partner in giving away assets with the potential to do so much good when shared,” he continued.
How does Jeff Bezos feel about the marriage?
Bezos, the world’s richest man, is thrilled that his ex-wife found love and is a fan of her new partner.
“Dan is such a great guy, and I’m happy and excited for the both of them,” he said in a statement to the Washington Post.”
