Cillian Murphy pronunciation and unexpected meaning behind his name explained

Oppenheimer: Official trailer (2023)

Cillian Murphy rose to fame when he starred as Tommy Shelby in the British period drama Peaky Blinders – but people still strugglt to say his name.

And like other actors who have Irish names and have reached international fame, Cillian is often faced with people commonly mispronouncing his name.

With the actor’s latest project, Oppenheimer on the horizon and being one of the most anticipated films of the year, it’s likely Cillian’s name will be under even more scrutiny than usual.

So now the Daily Express has decided to put the records straight when it comes to how Cillian is actually pronounced.

Many non-Irish fans believe Cillian is pronounced with an “S” sound, sounding like “Sillian,” but in fact, it’s pronounced with a “K” sound and when spoken out loud it says “Kill-ee-an”.

The reason behind his name being pronounced with a K is because it is spelt the Anglicized way, which is a separate language from English.

The name Cillian is thought to derive from a saint and to refer to holiness.

It’s composed of “Cill”, the Irish word for church or churchyard, while the “ian” part is thought to come from the pet suffix “ín” to denote youth or littleness.

As for his role in Oppenheimer, the Peaky Blinder’s star is set to play the lead role of J. Robert Oppenheimer.
