Dan Walker, 43, was one of many journalists to take to Twitter to congratulate Sally Nugent, 49, as she picked up a gong at the Royal Television Society Journalism Awards 2021, which took place in a virtual ceremony this evening. The star collected The Scoop of the Year Award for her work on BBC Breakfast’s interview with Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford about his experience of growing up in poverty.

The sportsman spoke to the BBC Breakfast reporter in June to urge the government to extend the provision of free school meals, as families faced increasing financial difficulties due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Although Dan had sent a sweet message of support to Sally earlier today following news of her award win, the presenter admitted he was distracted by her choice of footwear for the prestigious ceremony tonight.

The BBC Breakfast host couldn’t resist making a joke about his co-star’s cosy slippers after she posed for a photo at home after appearing on the virtual event.

Sally was pictured perched on her stairs in a sleek black outfit, which she had paired with fluffy sheepskin slippers for the occasion.

Making the most of the celebration, the presenter could be seen with a glass of bubbly in her hand while smiling for the camera.

She wrote alongside her photo on Twitter: Thrilled to win ⁦@RTS_media Scoop of the Year for our work on Free School Meals.

“Thankyou to driving force @ClaireRyanSport⁩, editor @BBCFrediani and everyone @BBCBreakfast⁩.

“And thank you ⁦@MarcusRashford for trusting us to tell your story.”

Dan then took to the comments section of Sally’s tweet and quipped: “Forget that… what about those slippers!!! #SlippersOfTheYear.”

After spotting her co-presenter’s witty remark, she explained that she was wearing the slippers as a tribute.

She wrote back: “That’s my little tribute to [winking face emoji].”

It is unclear who Sally was paying tribute to with the comfy accessory, but rapper Stormzy had previously sparked a frenzy online after he appeared on BBC Breakfast in his slippers, as he had accidentally forgotten to change out of them before he got into a taxi to the studio.

Fans took to the comments section of Dan’s tweet to share their thoughts on Sally’s loungewear for the glamorous occasion.

One person wrote: “Are they at least stiletto slippers?”

Another added: “Lockdown awards ceremonies!! Well done Sally, well deserved.”

Dan also congratulated Sally on her achievement after it was announced the programme had been awarded the accolade.

Retweeting the news from the Royal Television Society’s official Twitter page in view of his 684,000 followers, Dan added: “Brilliant news.

“Well played @BBCBreakfast & particularly @sallynugent, producer @ClaireRyanSport and our boss @BBCFrediani for driving it through #RTSAwards.”

Alongside her Twitter post, Sally continued to thank her BBC colleagues over on her Instagram page, while also joking about her choice of footwear.

She penned: “Thankyou to the brilliant @bbcbreakfast team who work day and night to bring you the news. Thankyou @bbcfrediani for the support and guidance.

“Most of all thank you to all the mums, dads, teachers and volunteers who talked to us about child food poverty.

“And finally thank you to @marcusrashford for using his voice to help others – and for putting his trust in two frazzled working mums to help tell his story. And yes. I am wearing my slippers.”
