Ellie Goulding, 36, took to Twitter on Sunday to defend Tom Grennan after he received backlash for asking the singer “are they you real boobs?” when they took to the Brit Awards stage to present one of the trophies.

The Burn hitmaker wrote: “A word on Brit/tit gate … I was wearing a beautiful breastplate, thank you all for appreciating it.

“My friend @Tom_Grennan is 100 percent an ally and we were having a bit of fun.

“No offence taken, no harm intended – and no other interpretations necessary x.”

Tom also shared Ellie’s post along with his own explanation.

He said: “Love ya @elliegoulding. What started as a joke between Ellie and I before we went on stage came out all wrong.

“The nerves got the better of us, but that does not excuse what was said, and I sincerely apologise to anyone who was offended – that’s not me at all, and I am sorry x.”

Plenty of users took to the comments to weigh in on the issue, including a user named Scott.

He said: “I’m glad you didn’t take offence, it did seem offensive when he said it, a lot of viewers noticed, even though you say Tom is having fun.

“I think it’s a time and place for it not on national TV as a lot of viewers has disliked the comment made mainly woman. Pick your words wisely I say.” (sic)

Another user called Dave said: “If she didn’t take any offence, no one else should, bless her for being such a good mate sticking up for ya.”

And Gia wrote: “I’m glad that you guys dealt with this in a good way and nobody was offended (hopefully) love ya.”

Following their time on stage on Saturday night, Ellie shared a sweet snap of herself and Tom hugging while the awards took place.
