Kate Garraway, 54, has revealed that she has had to discover a “new way to be in love” with her husband Derek Draper, 54, as he remains seriously ill from the long effects of Covid. The Good Morning Britain presenter has been caring for Derek since he contracted Covid in March 2020 and had to be admitted to hospital.

The virus caused him to suffer from inflammation in the brain, attacking his kidneys, lungs and liver.

He was placed in an induced coma and remained in hospital for more than a year.

In April, Derek returned home to Kate and their children, Darcey, 15, and Billy, 12, where he requires 24-hour care.

In a candid new interview, Kate has admitted a “new path is emerging” as the couple navigates a new dynamic in their relationship.

The Life Stories host told You magazine: “I’m not sure that we’ve ever fallen out of love, but I think a new path is emerging, a new way to be in love.

“He puts huge trust in me. He just says, ‘Whatever you think.’ Which is wonderful, but I do get quite tearful about it.

“I think, ’God, I hope I’m worthy of that trust.’ But I’ve got his back.

“That is a relationship in itself, isn’t it? How many times do couples have doubts about each other?

“That’s a positive thing to come out of this, to have that certainty of each other. He and I are very close.”

It has been confirmed that there will be a follow-up to the couple’s award-winning documentary, Finding Derek.

The sequel promises to give an update on Derek’s progress since we last saw him.

In a positive update last month, Derek joined Kate and their children when they headed out to watch a pantomime.

Despite being exhausted afterward, Derek thought the trip was well “worth it”.

Kate explained to GMB viewers: “He is phenomenally fatigued at the moment. Very fatigued and very weak.

“After the trip to the pantomime, he was not out of bed afterward.

“He thought it was worth it and it was a special thing to be with the children holding their hands and doing something normal.”

Kate admitted she did question whether it was wise for him to join the family because he was so tired.

However, Derek was adamant and Kate said it was lovely to see him smile again.

She added: “The speech wasn’t there that morning but you could see that he was aware that something special was happening.

“Before we left, I said, ‘You’re very tired, do you want to do this?’ And he said, ‘Yes.'”
