I’ll be (hard)back! Glossy $1,500 coffee table book charts Arnold Schwarzenegger’s life – from young bodybuilding champ, to movie icon and Governor of California

A new $1,500 photobook will celebrate Arnold Schwarzenegger’s journey from poverty to bodybuilding champion to movie icon – to Governor of California. 

The two volume edition is set to include portraits by leading photographers, such as Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Robert Mapplethorpe, Herb Ritts, Francesco Scavullo, and Andy Warhol.

Among the images will be shots of Schwarzenegger in his early bodybuilding days, as well as stills from film’s he has featured in and dozen’s of photographs from his personal archive.

The glossy coffee table book’s publisher Taschen have described the project as ‘a big, brawny salute to the world’s favorite muscleman!’

The book, titled: ‘Arnold Schwarzenegger: Athlete, Actor, American, Activist’, is the result of a decade of collaboration Taschen said.

Arnold Schwarzenegger photographed by Sante D’Orazio for the film End of Days in 1999 will also form part of the glossy photobook. The snap of him on the bike will likely remind fans of his role as the Terminator

The Terminator actor launched the book at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles on Wednesday.  

The book will be available for retail purchases in July. 

Fans can purchase a collector’s edition of the book, numbered and signed by Schwarzenegger himself, for $1,500. 

In addition the publisher is selling an Annie Leibovitz Art Edition of the book, complete with a nearly lifesize print of Arnold on the ski slopes from the June 1997 cover of Vanity Fair, for $15,000.

As well as the book being signed by Schwarzenegger, the poster will be signed by Leibovitz.

Among the images to feature in the glossy picture book is a 1967 photograph taken by Albert Busek of Schwarzenegger aged 20 as an Austrian bodybuilder. 

Sante D’Orazio’s photograph of the actor for the film End of Days in 1999 will also form part of the photobook.

The Terminator actor launched the book at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles on Wednesday

Schwarzenegger was born in Thal, Austria in 1947 to an alcoholic father who was once a member of the Nazi party. 

As a young man he began bodybuilding with the International Federation of bodybuilders. 

He went on to win five Mr Universe titles and seven Mr. Olympia crowns during his bodybuilding career. 

Schwarzenegger emigrated to the United States in 1968 and turned his hand to acting, becoming a naturalized citizen in 1983. 

He starred in films such as Conan, The Terminator and Total Recall.  

The star married into the Kennedy family by wedding Maria Shriver in 1986. 

The couple had four children but split in 2011 following the revelation that Arnold had conducted an affair with the couple’s housekeeper and fathered a lovechild. 

In 2003 Schwarzenegger successfully ran to become Governor of California and was reelected in 2006. 

He is one of the only people ever to retain duel Austrian-American citizenship. His home country usually makes its citizens give up their passport if they become citizens of another country, but a special exception was made for Arnie.
