Loose Women: Kate Garraway gives update on husband Derek Draper
Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has said her husband Derek Draper is “living in the world of the unknown” in an update about his health.
The former lobbyist has faced a series of health complications, including kidney failure and liver damage, since he fell seriously ill with coronavirus back in March 2020.
Derek, 56, is now living with lasting damage to his organs and while he has made some progress, the battle is still very much ongoing.
Speaking on the Emotionally Speaking podcast with host Peter Leonard, Kate shared: “When he wakes up in the morning it is heartbreaking because it feels as though you are watching someone who may have been inhabiting his old life in his dreams, and then he wakes up and you see the cloud descend of the battle he has ahead.”
Reflecting on his health as a whole, she continued: “If you look back, there is some progress, he has [said] more words now and his voice is stronger,” adding that at times she will hear “a little bit of a Chorley accent”.

With his body however, Derek still cannot sit up on his own without assistance and relies on his family and carers for help.
Kate went on to say that his brain, which was once “his allay and friend” was also now his “enemy”.
“I think he’s had a big emotional struggle.
“One of the challenges with Derek is we’ve never felt like he is safe, so every infection and rush back to hospital might be the moment he is taken from us.
“We are still hopeful he will improve but we have no clear timeline on this,” she added.

Just last week, Kate revealed on Loose Women that he was back in hospital, but thankfully nothing to do with “horrific drama”.
She shared: “He’s gotten back in for something that he began last year, which he needed the second part of which will hopefully mean he has more movement, physical fractures.
“So it’s a positive hospital thing. So he’s actually not at home at the moment. So when the visiting game, but hopefully won’t be in for too long.”
Speaking on Heart Radio earlier this month, Kate likened Derek’s ongoing battle to a “rollercoaster” but vowed to never give up hope as she focuses on the positives.
She went on to praise their children Darcey, 17, and Billy, 14, for the way they had handled the situation.
“He does come alive and you can see him kind of trying to be the old Dad as much as he can, trying to make them laugh, trying to do different things,” Kate added.
Derek became the longest surviving patient with coronavirus after spending 184 days in and out of intensive care.
At the time, doctors made the decision to put him in a medically induced coma and on a ventilator before he gained a minimal state of consciousness.
In April 2021, he was finally discharged from hospital on a trial basis under medical care.
