The former lead singer of Sister Sledge departed the group in 1989 after achieving two US number one hits with We Are Family and He’s The Greatest Dancer.

Since leaving the world-famous group, Kathy has gone on to release 12 singles as a solo artist with one taking number one spot.

Now, the mum-of-two is gearing up to headline a UK festival as the nation prepares to come out of lockdown on June 21.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Kathy said: “I cannot wait, honestly, it’s much different from seeing handclaps on the screen, or roses and flowers and hearts. I love the flowers and hearts nut I can’t wait to just hear someone sing along.”

She went on to add: “I’m very interactive with the crowd and so it’s reciprocated, you feel it.

“I’m so excited about getting back on stage.”

Kathy, who is headlining Henley Festival in September 2021, continued: “I love festivals, I’ve always produced live festivals.”

The superstar added that she finds crowds “interesting” when she sees parents singing along with their children, who have since become fans of their “hits that we all know and love” as they grow up.

“What I did was, I have invested in and found people that get behind the band, we get behind the performance,” she said.

Kathy went on to explain: “I’ll have these huge screens of the original sisters and then I had the choreographer match the choreography with the dancers.

“So you can see ‘Wow, this is like an experience like this is what we brought’ it’s very exciting.”

Kathy will perform to a packed crowd at Henley with the Disco Classical Orchestra.

“They’re amazing. I love doing concerts with them, it’s very powerful.

“When you hear these songs with like the real strings that Nile Rodgers and the late Bernard Edwards produced, it gives you goosebumps.”

She added: “It gives me goosebumps because I’m not used to having a huge orchestra of real strings and all that behind me.”

As the world plummeted into lockdown in March 2020 following the outbreak of the coronavirus, Kathy and her daughter Kristen launched their latest project.

Titled “Family Room” the Instagram show which Kathy and Kristen hope to turn into a network television show connected the singer with fans and friends across the globe.

“We found this community really built on We Are Family, and it is so much more meaning now.

“And now we’re now we’re talking to networks to take it to take it to our living rooms, it’s so cool.”

She added: “I want to make sure that we have a network that’s global, because, you know, is the music that I have there is like, so many reasons why we want to just keep it global.”

Disco Classical ft Kathy Sledge will be headlining alongside Madness, James Blunt and Sophie Ellis-Bextor at Henley Festival 2021 from 15th – 19th September with Henley’s Summer Fling taking place from 9th – 11th July 2021 www.henley-festival.co.uk.
