Louise Minchin, 52, has revealed how she sparked injury fears amongst medical staff while taking part in the Patagonia triathlon, PataganMan. The BBC Breakfast host competed in the challenge three years ago, and admitted to bursting into tears when she reached the end of an 180k bicycle ride, as she was happily reunited with her husband David Minchin for a break.

I started to cry like a baby

Reflecting on the mental challenge of taking part in an extreme triathlon, Louise explained how towards the end of the cycle section, she began to feel extremely fatigued.

She shared: “There was this guy and we were going up the hills. I’m so slow going up hills, I promise, I probably could have walked faster.

“He would just overtake me on the hill. Eventually, we started having conversation, I was beside myself and I was crying inside,” she added while appearing on the Geraint Thomas Cycling Club podcast.

Once the TV host reached the point where she was allowed to stop for food and water and spotted her husband waiting, she began to uncontrollably weep.

She continued: “But then on the crest of this hill I saw all these… they were wearing fluorescent jackets, the porters, and I knew my husband was there and I went downhill, and I started to cry like a baby.”

The medical staff on-site noticed her tears and immediately rushed over, fearing she had potentially injured herself

Louise added: “By the time I got to him [her husband], I was like, ‘Ahhh’ and all the people started rushing over, like, ‘Oh my god, is she injured?’

“And he’s like, ‘She will be OK once she has had a cup of tea’.”

It comes as Louise is on her way to a full recovery after she broke her foot last year.

The BBC Breakfast host celebrated a big milestone on social media last month, as she felt able to run for “five minutes” following the painful injury.

Louise typed on Twitter in view of her 203,900 followers: “The no longer broken foot is making progress.

“I am on @Couchto5K week 4, and managed five whole minutes running!”

She added: “Thanks @jowhiley.”

Underneath her fans celebrated her triumph, as they shared their difficulties of being able to run.

One said: “I’m starting tomorrow after work never been a runner I’m 55 and I’m overweight it just looks a good place to start .. wish me luck.” [sic]

A second replied: “I got halfway through week two and my knee went again!! I’m destined never to run again. At least I have a bike and a turbo trainer.”

A third commented: “I’ve just finished listening to your book. It’s been keeping me company for the last few weekends on my long runs. Saved the last couple of chapters for today when I was nearly home. Loved it! Glad to see you are back running “

While a fourth remarked: “Well done. It takes real discipline in rehab to make gradual progress and not do too much too soon. I’m currently two days in an @militaryinmotion 100k challenge. 10k run for 10 consecutive days…it’s gonna be tough.”

The respected journalist explained she first sustained the injury when she was training for the Epic Extreme triathlon Norseman in the summer of 2019.

However, back in December, Louise was forced to take some time off work for her operation, and only returned to BBC Breakfast in February this year.
