Megan Thee Stallion Sues Record Label Over Definition Of An ‘Album’

Hip-hop superstar Megan Thee Stallion is taking her record label to court, accusing them of trying to stunt her by not considering her 2021 album, Something for Thee Hotties.

Stallion filed the lawsuit on February 18 in Harris County District Court against 1501 Certified Entertainment.

The lawsuit, reported first by Billboard, said that the label wanted to keep Stallion stuck in her contract by claiming that the album did not meet their benchmark and therefore is not eligible to meet her “minimum recording commitment.”

Something For Thee Hotties dropped on October 29, 2021, and the label sent a letter in January that it will not consider the album under its name. However, Stallion has argued that the only parameter that she has to meet to match the standards is by making the total runtime of the album more than 45 minutes, a parameter which the album easily meets.

Stallion and 1501 have shared a troubled partnership since 2020, when she first complained that the label is stopping her from releasing music. The court granted her a restraining order against the label and she released Suga on March 6. In 2021, the label also created problems when the rapper featured on a remix of BTS‘ “Butter.”
