Meghan and Harry compete in game of table tennis as Duchess makes surprise appearance in Invictus Games trailer

There is still nearly a year to go until the competition starts, but Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been ramping up their promotion of the Invictus Games.

The couple have released a short trailer for next year’s game, which features them playing a friendly game of table tennis against several of the competing athletes.

Shared via Twitter earlier on Wednesday, the clip has been released as tickets for the games’ opening and closing ceremonies go on sale.

Fans of the Royal couple will need to be quick if they want to attend the games in Dusseldorf next September, though, as the majority of seats have already sold out.

With tickets starting from as little as €33 though, it’s hardly surprising that sports lovers have eagerly bought tickets for next year’s event at the Merkur Spiel-Arena.

The games should be one of 2023’s sporting highlights as wounded, injured and sick service personnel both serving and veterans come together to compete.

Many of the veterans have been injured in the line of duty and the competition will emphasise the importance of mental and physical rehabilitation after trauma.

It is an issue close to Prince Harry’s heart, having founded the Invictus Games in 2013 after witnessing how sport was used to rehabilitate veterans in the US.

Taking his inspiration from the Warrior Games, the Duke of Sussex created his own version of the event which was first held in London.

In the trailer, which uses black-and-white photography, the clip opens with a shot of an unused table tennis table surrounded by fog – underlining the importance of the sport which is being introduced to the games next year.

Prince Harry appears almost halfway through the teaser in a game against a blonde-haired player.

As she goes to pick up the ball, the 38 year old Prince offers an encouraging smile and nods as the game commences.

Wearing a classic black T-shirt with the Invictus logo and matching black jeans, the Duke looks smart and ready to compete.

Failing to return the serve, the Invictus founder smiles and walks towards the stadium’s exit which allows another competitor to take his place.

Giving the man a hearty handshake, the Duke ushers him to the table before leaving the arena.

Even the Duchess of Sussex makes a surprise appearance in the trailer, as it draws to a close.

It shows Meghan gracefully picking a table tennis racket, before panning to Prince Harry as he lovingly smiles at his new opponent.

Though the trailer is less than two minutes long, it is hoped that the trailer will raise awareness of the event next year.
