Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s battle with the British media rages on. The latest round involves claims based on the new epilogue of Finding Freedom (*the* royal biography about the Sussexes’ royal exit), which was excerpted by People this week.
Lawyers for Harry and Meghan are fighting claims that the couple have “reignited a rift” with the rest of the royal family by “publicly attacking” the Queen and have “written to at least one major British newspaper saying that the claims are ‘false and inaccurate,'” according to a report from the Daily Beast.
As Newsweek points out, at least one of the reports Team Sussex takes issue with appears to have come from The Sun, which accused Harry and Meghan of using the Finding Freedom update to take a “savage swipe” at the Queen in an article headlined “Blame of Thrones.”
The report focused on the Queen’s public response to Harry and Meghan’s explosive sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey and how the Sussex camp reacted to her statement.
In their Oprah interview, Harry and Meghan revealed a lot about what led to their royal exit—including, among other things, a lack of support for Meghan when she struggled with suicidal thoughts and that there had been “concerns and conversations” among unspecified members of the royal family about “how dark” their son Archie’s skin would be.
After the interview aired, the Queen released a statement saying that the entire royal family was “saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan” and that the “issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning.” The statement went on to say that “some recollections may vary,” but that they family was taking all of Harry and Meghan’s claims seriously.
In an excerpt of the new epilogue, Finding Freedom co-authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand write that the Queen’s comment about recollections varying “did not go unnoticed by the couple, who a close source said were ‘not surprised’ that full ownership was not taken,” according to The Sun.
The paper also shared a quote from a source described in the book as a “pal of Meghan,” who apparently told Scobie and Durand, “Months later and little accountability has been taken. How can you move forward with that?”
Those brief quotes seem to be basis for the “savage swipe at the Queen” claims, which Team Sussex doesn’t think is fair/accurate. Scobie actually jumped into the fray publicly, summing up what he sees as the problem with claims on Twitter.
